The classic cookbook, an essential for any chef right? Not necessarily. With a majority of Americans using the internet on a daily basis, cookbooks have become almost obsolete. It is easier than ever to pull up a recipe using the internet. With a simple Google search of "pasta salad," there are over 100 possibilities. Social media specifically is a widely used resource for sharing and obtaining recipes. With approximately 1,000,000 subscribers "Tasty" on YouTube continues to post food videos daily ranging from classic chicken noodle soup to mini sweet potatoes pies. You may recognize these short video clips from social media.
A majority of the Tasty channel's videos are a little over a minute, making them quick and easy to view. When you watch a video, you get the chef's point view of what they are doing, whether they are pouring flour into a bowl or batter into a pan. Each video is instrumental and includes on screen captions of the amount of ingredients to add. The YouTube videos also have the complete recipe in the description in case you are interested in making it, or just want to have a better look at what the recipe entails.
I've always been interested in cooking and baking, and these videos caught my attention when I first started seeing them around social media. I admire the brief but simple nature of the recipes, and wanted to test one myself to answer the common question for many popular trends on social media, "Does this really work?" After scrolling through the channel's plethora of recipes, I decided to make the Cookies & Cream Brownie Cheesecake Bars. In a mere 55 seconds, I learned how to make the bars, and then set out to get the necessary ingredients. With my meticulous preparation and difficulty because the cream cheese hadn't softened enough (cream cheese can be hard to soften, a tip for others making this recipe would be to heat it in the microwave for a couple seconds), I put the mix for the bars in the oven. 45 minutes later, I was greeted with a delectable smell and a delicious pan full of cookies and cream brownie cheesecake bars. I let them cool, then cut them into even squares, picked up a square, and took my first bite. The bar was rich and creamy, and the recipe proved to be a great success. I decided to bring my pan of brownies into my APS group. After sharing with my peers, many remarked how much they liked my recipe. At first I was doubtful of "Tasty" video recipes, but after the amazing results I received with my attempt, I was pleasantly surprised and encourage anyone looking to try them to go for it!
