Chapter 29
(America's POV)
Maxon expected me to follow him, but I couldn't. My leg! It was awful, the stinging pain burned my thigh, when Maxon had left I attempted moving but fell to the ground. Then the alarm went off. I had to hide, I expected Aspen to come out and instead Maxon did he must have seen me. He ran up to me, "America Come on." He gestured me to follow I frowned and shook my head. "Don't you see, I can’t?" I said, tears started to flow down my cheeks. Maxon didn't leave me though, he grabbed me and carried me. I wrapped my hands protectively around his next.
He began to run, I heard the rebel’s voices drawling closer. My grip tightened around Maxon. His pace quickened, we had to hurry to the underground passage, we had one more turn to go. Then I heard a voice so cruel and cold it made me stand on end. I looked up, a rebel was standing a close 20 feet away he turned to face the other rebels, "Hey guys I found them!" He hollered. Maxon didn't wait he ran while the rebel had his back turned. He slowly slid me into the tunnel that lead to a shelter then he jumped in himself heard the door slid shut behind us I laid on my back because I didn't dare get up. I was scared to. Maxon found a candle that dimly lit the room.
I glanced around the room, there was a small shelf along the wall, it held canned food like pears and fruits. I glanced to a small sink in the corner and then a stack of matches and candles. There was one blanket in the other corner. The room was all made of concrete. It had a very unwelcoming feel to it.
I heard the rebels from above us. "So where are they!" One yelled, another one answered back, "They were right here swear! They must have escaped!" I then heard a loud punching sound. I winced at the sound because of the amount of pain someone up there must have been feeling, "To where! They were right in the garden huh?" there was another punching sound. I heard a scream it made me shiver a little, what would they do to me or Maxon if they found us again?
Maxon saw me in the corner shivering in fear and came closer to me and sat down he slid his arm around me, I rested my head on his shoulder and I usually don't cry in front of people but I did. Tears rolled down my cheeks. He couldn't talk to me to comfort me because they were still up there. I heard them one last time, "Come on let’s keep surveying the garden." then we heard footsteps slowly walk away. I waited a few minutes before speaking quietly to Maxon.
"Maxon?" I asked, He turned to look at me and he smiled and gently took a piece of loose hair and tucked it behind my ear. He placed his hand on my cheek, "Yes my dear." He whispered back I leaned in closer to him, I was cold but I didn't want him to know. "How long will we be down here?" I asked. He looked at me more intensely in the eye. "I don't know I could never be sure, but my guess would be just overnight." He said I nodded. Maxon sat up and started sifting through drawers. I started shivering again but this time out of temperature. I could feel my lips turning purple.
My shivering got worse, my toes began to freeze a little I huddled in closer to myself. I tried to keep my shivering under control, but I couldn't. Maxon started to look over at me, "America are you hungry?" He began to ask until he saw me, he walked over to me, I pressed myself closer to the wall. He grabbed my hand. He slowly see it back down. "America, you’re as cold as ice!" He said. I shook my head. "I-I'm f-f-f-ine really." I said but couldn't keep the shiver out of my voice.
He walked over and grabbed the blanket. He wrapped it around me. I nodded, "Thanks." I said. I couldn't bare to look in his eyes, I could hear it in his voice he was scared. Not only for himself but also for me. He sat down next to me and wrapped his arm around me and pulled me closer. I snuggled up against him, he was so warm.
Maxon leaned in against me too, then the rebel’s voice came back, we grew as quiet as we could.
"Any luck?"
"Not yet, but I think we might find them inside..."
"Okay, but... We don't have much longer, the guards might come again."
Then I heard another voice one all too familiar.
Aspen.
"America! Lady America!"
Then I heard the rebels speak, "Another guard quick you handle this one." I could hear the guard’s footsteps in the distance as they ran off. Then I heard Aspen again.
"Who are you? What have you done with Lady America!" He yelled. Then the sound of a gun went off, Maxon wrapped his arms tighter around me as if to block out all the sound of what had just happened but it was too late I knew what happened.
Tears came down fast as I leaned in to Maxon I cried into his shirt. Maxon stroked my hair gently reassuring me everything was okay, but I knew it wasn't because I knew Aspen was gone, forever...
