"There's a difference, between taking advantage of your resources and asking for something that's willingly given. Tell me, Jonah, how do you think they milked the Earth until it was dry?"

===

Jonah could remember a few things.

Those few things consisted of his parents, a single command, and the day everything happened. He could remember by looking down at his bracelet, a woven strand of strangely colored hair tied so strongly around his wrist that he doubted he would ever be able to take it off.

Oh, and of course, he remembered the fables.

The five capitals--North, South, East, West, and Pangea, the center of it all--stood in his mind as his ever present goal. It was his goal... but yet he didn't know why. He didn't have a purpose; until they came. She could move as if she were made of the water that once fell from the sky, you couldn't knock him from the Earth even if you wanted to, she was hallow and swift as the wind that cut through his hair, his eyes set everything he saw ablaze, and she...

She could do the impossible

She was different from the others. She could reach the stars.
