I came back into consciousness some time later, I don’t know how long later, but I could tell that it was daytime. The sunlight poked through gaps in the rubble. I couldn’t breathe properly and I could feel that almost every part of me was trapped under the remains of house. It was then, that I realised just how Kalia had felt, and I felt in my heart, that perhaps I was unfair to Kalia, and I decided that as soon as I was freed, I would apologize for being so dismissive of Kaila’s life. That was, if somebody decided to get me out.
While I was inside the rubble, I had a lot of time to think, and part of that time was spent panicking that I was going to be left down there. I could her Kalia screaming my name again, and I felt a great deal of comfort in the fact that Kalia was still here. I trusted that she wouldn’t let me die. I just hoped that trust alone would be enough.
“Kalia” I called as loudly as my constricted lungs would allow. There was something large pressing down on my chest, and I realised that if I didn’t get out of there soon, I would die. “Kalia!” I decided that she would probably start moving stuff if she knew that I was alive. It worked. I could feel some of the debris moving as Kalia climbed the mound. I noticed that she was climbing very slowly. She was probably scared that it would collapse again.
A large piece of wood fell from above me, landing with a tremendous force onto my arm. I heard the bone crack and I screamed in agony. The rubble was slowly falling in around me as Kalia moved around on the surface of the pile. I desperately wanted to tell her to stop, but I knew that even if I did, she wouldn’t hear me, my throat was closing up, and I knew that even if I shouted it would only come out as a whisper.
The pain in my arm was increasing by the second, and I didn’t want to drift back out of consciousness in case I didn’t wake up again. Just as I thought that, another piece of debris fell from above me, landing about an inch away from my head and I felt the adrenaline rise up inside me, but there was nowhere for it to go, I was trapped. All that I could do was sit and wait.
