Reality, without warning, struggled and strained to eject Orroz. He knew this was a war he cannot win. Eventually the universe will have its wish and Orroz would be no more in this plane of existence. His mid section had already vanished. Now the process crept down his legs and up his chest. He clenched his teeth and mentally began to chant several incantations that would keep him here, if for a little while longer. Knowing he could not, can not stop writing at any cost, Orroz flicked his hand at the pen. With life, however artificial, given to it, it continued his writing, putting Orroz's history onto paper whilst he still struggled to remain in this universe...
"Death!" I practically shouted. "It's been too long, old friend--"
"Not so loud, Orroz," Death said quietly. "No one knows who I truly am here, and I want it to stay that way."
"Many apologies," I said in a more hushed tone. "But why are you going incognito here, of all places."
"He's here to see me," Chloe answered. She couldn't help but smile at the notion. "Not a lot of people know that I'm married to Death. His enemies might try to use me to their advantage."
"Who could possibly be enemies with Death himself?" I asked.
"Everyone who doesn't want to die," Death replied. "Of course, 'enemies' is too strong of a word, to be frank. I am no friend, but I'm certainly not an enemy to anyone. People just don't want to die when the their time comes. If they knew of my relationship with Chloe, they might kidnap her and use her as a bargaining chip. They would use her to make sure I don't come for them when the time comes. They become immortal, in a sense."
"So I see," I said. "Don't worry though. Your secret's safe with me." At this, Death grinned at me. It was a horrifying sight. His skin became transparent and showed a living skull gazing back at me with black voids for eyes. He and Chloe seemed quite amused at my reaction. Chloe even began giggling.
"Sorry, Orroz," Death said as his face returned to normal. "I forgot that could happen sometimes."
"It's always a skull; why do you always have to portray yourself with a skull for a face?" I thought out loud.
"What, should I do butterflies and rainbows instead?" He grinned again, this time with his face normal, and he gave me a friendly punch in the arm.
"Strife always said you were a sarcastic bastard," I chuckled. "Now I see why."
Death and I had a lot to catch up on. I learned that he met Chloe one night, walking along a dark road, when bandits tried to rape and rob her. Thankfully Death was nearby and put an end to it quickly. When he first properly saw her, his heart broke into a thousand pieces, and she put them back together again. They both (somehow) fell in love with each other. Chloe spends her days in the Land of Nightmares, while Death went off to do his job. Tonight was to be the hundredth anniversary of their marriage. I was honored to be part of the celebration.
One night, however, I spotted Chloe rubbing her temples in obvious pain. She was in the vampire castle by the throne, leaning against a wall in an attempt to keep her off the ground as she obviously battled with intense pain.
"What's wrong, Chloe?" I asked her, concerned. She just shook her head and moaned. I tried working my magic to cause her pain to leave her. But nothing seemed to work, not even my angelic magics. "Chloe, I need you to tell me what's wrong. I can help. Trust me."
