Chapter 2: Blake
________________________
She didn't trust him and he knew it. If he didn't know himself, he wouldn't trust him either. He doesn't even know what school his shirt is to, the only reason he knows it's a school is because Annabelle is wearing the same shirt too.
She's gorgeous. Not too girly, but not a tomboy.
He watches her sleep that night. He hasn't seen a girl besides her since he was abandoned by his mom and dad. He tends to only know how to protect himself. If the authorities found out the real reason why he's running, it would be catastrophic.
He was abandoned by his parents, but then his fury grew and he set their house on fire. He found out the next day that they both burned to death. So, he ran farther and farther. He's been everywhere in America by now, picking up clothes, weapons, shelter, and skills. He will let her sleep, because she brings back the good memories in him. The times of shelter and warmth and wholeness.
It's almost 7:00 in the morning, he judges by how the sun looks from the shed.
"Wake up sunshine."
Annabelle awakes with a burst.
"Ahhhh!", she screams.
"Catch your breath! Jeez, what happened?"
She seems so scared, so worried., he thinks.
"I was at school and my teacher was killed. And I ran into a sh-", she realizes, "It wasn't a dream was it? Your name is Blake then?"
"Yup."
Her facial expressions say it all. Realization hits her like a grenade.
"Hey Blake, I need to go to my house before I got to school."
"I'm coming with you."
"I don't need a chaperone. I know where my house is."
"Listen, you need me more than I need you right now. So you don't have a choice.", he snaps back.
They leave 2 minutes later.
It takes a while to get to her house. When they get to a peachy dwelling, he stops and grabs her arm. They crouch behind a bush. Her eyes seem to be fixated on the cops too.
"Does Annabelle Malley live here?", says one of the officers.
"Yes sir", says the lady at the door who Blake figures is Annabelle's mother.
"Ma'am, there was an incident at her school and she is missing. We believe that she is the one who killed Mrs. Cod, the Spanish teacher. Many of her peers have pointed to her as being the killer. We have a warrant for her arrest. If you have any information, you are urged to tell authorities. Have a nice evening."
Blake sees the mother start to cry as she closes the door.
He puts his hand on Annabelle's mouth.
"Don't say a word. We need to go. Now.", he whispers forcefully.
"I need to explain to my mom that this is absolute bull! I ran because I was scared I was going to die, not that I killed someone.", she muffles through his hand as she tried to pry it off her mouth but it's no use. He is stronger than most.
They get up and she runs deeper into the woods.
She gets deeper.
Deeper.
Deeper until she is in the middle, and falls on the floor, breathless and crying.
"Why me? I am a nobody. I thought no one even knew I existed. Now I'm wanted for murder?!"
He sits by her and tries to comfort her, but it's no use. She pulls back and tries to ponder her situation.
"Can I ever go back to the life of an unknown?", she asked.
"No. But the way I live is the safest. You get food, shelter, clothes, everything besides normality. But the thrill is part of your everyday experience", he chuckles.
They sit in the grass and wait for the wind to subside. But it's not wind the realize.
"Helicopter", they both say, alarmed at the urgency of finding Annabelle.
"Quick, hide behind that tree!", Blake points.
The helicopter is right above them.
They know that he's here.
They are going to arrest her, but what's going to happen to him?
He can't protect anyone now. Not even himself.
