Chapter 1

I walk out of my home as snow blankets the ground. Sanctuary seems so quiet this time of year. My footsteps toward town are muffled as I head to the main center.

"Maryanne!" A voice shouts my name in the distance. I turn to my left to see my childhood friend Jake waving his arms frantically.

"What's wrong?" I say as he comes to a halt beside me gasping for air.

"A trader has come. But he has parts not like the ones we have like what Diamond Sanctuary has." I take his hand and together we run to town center.

"Come one come all!" The trader's voice echoes through town causing the villagers to come to see the commotion. "I have specialty items you can't find anywhere else."  Jake's eyes light up with curiosity so ferocious it seems like he might just steal the stuff.

"Where did you get these parts?!" Annabeth the geek of my friends starts to touch everything that the trader has left out.

"Everything here can only be found in Iron City." I hear gasps and murmurs in the crowd.

"Then how did you get these parts?!" A villager shouts and more and more villagers question the man.

"Everyone settle down!" A man yells in a booming voice and all others stop, it's the village mayor, "This man has come baring essentials! We need these parts, Sanctuary is running low on parts to repair our alarm!"

"He is not lying these parts are genuine. They are made of 100% pure iron." I say and soon the townspeople have squished in so tight I can no longer even breathe. I feel someone tug my arm and pull me out of the crowd.

"Thank god we escaped that crowd." Annabeth sighs.

"Thanks, where is Jake?" I ask.

"He's to far in the crowd to save." Annabeth laughs. I start to laugh with her enjoying the loudness instead of the stillness of winter.

Soon the crowd disperses and the stillness is back. Annabeth left me alone an hour ago, she has to take care of her husband and children. I trudge home in the quiet snow, even knowing no one will be there.

My front door creaks open and I slip inside. I light my lanterns around my house and I realize how lonely I am. I just wish I had someone to come home to everyday instead of my cold empty home. This is how it is, I go and venture out to gather things, work a little, and then come home to an empty house.  It's not so bad, but I do wish there was something more waiting for me.
