Juliet Wayward had no idea what she was getting herself into. Not at all. At the moment she was walking through King's Cross Station, the busiest train station she's ever seen, looking for platform nine and three quarters.
First of all, she was sure there was no such thing as platform nine and three quarters. There was 9 and 10. Desperately, she looks around hoping to find some help. 'Maybe this whole Hogwarts thing is a joke.' The red haired girl thinks to herself. This wouldn't be the first time she was pranked. 'It was probably the girls from school' They had always made fun of her for everything, but Juliet didn't blame them. She was strange.
Under stress and pressure unexplainable things would happen. Juliet got expelled from her first school from suddenly making the classroom snake float onto the teacher's desk during a speech. That was the first of many, but Juliet had always thought she was a freak. Not a witch!
"Sweetheart are you lost?" A sweet voice asked. It reminded Juliet of her mother's voice, but there was no way her mother would be here. Both parents despised her. The girl looks up at the source of the voice and sees a tall, tired looking woman standing with a younger girl. The girl had a cart and books similar to Juliet's. 'Maybe this isn't a prank after all...'
"I'm looking for platform nine and three quarters?" Juliet says hesitantly. If these people weren't witches too they'd think she was a freak. But on the other hand, who didn't think Juliet was a freak?
"It's straight through that wall. Zoe why don't you go first." The woman replies sweetly. She was incredibly nice. "What's your name?"
"Juliet Wayward." Juliet answers as she watches Zoe giggle and run through the wall. "Can I do that?!"
"Of course you can! Give it a go! And I'm Emmaline, Zoe's mother." Juliet nods with a smile and starts toward the wall. Just as her stuff is about to fly everywhere from the impact of the brick wall, she runs straight through it.
Zoe didn't want to leave her mother for nine months. What would her mom do? Her father was dead, they didn't have a pet, and her mother hated reading! "You better get on the train, Zo! You don't want to miss it!" Her mother reminded her, pulling her into a tight hug. She smelled like fresh fruit and tea. Zoe was going to miss her so much. "I love you mama! Promise you'll write me." The 11 year old begs, shaking her mom's arms. "I promise. I love you, and I will miss you the whole time!" Her mother replies with a soft smile. She always had a soft smile, she'd always been very quiet and shy. Zoe studied her face before she left, memorizing every barely noticeable wrinkle, the bags under her eyed, the soft smile, the auburn hair, her green eyes. She took one last look at her mother before spinning on her heels and making her way through the crowd towards the train.
Juliet watched Zoe and her mom embrace, wishing she had that. She would give anything for her mother's attention. Zoe started to make her way to the train. Juliet followed close behind, hoping this Zoe girl was as nice as her mom.
-------------------------------------
"So you must be a muggle born if you're following." Zoe chuckles. "That's okay. You'll like the Wizarding world. Unless you get eaten by a house elf." Juliet gasped. Zoe laughs again, grabbing her stomach. "I'm kidding house elves won't hurt you. Boy, you've got a lot to learn. Good thing we have a long train ride."
-------------------------------------
"So, the seeker catches the snitch and-" Zoe is interrupted by their door opening. A girl wearing a beanie and a leather jacket barges into their compartment. "All the people in my compartment are assholes. I'm bandit. If you need any help getting your bearings let me know. You look like a muggleborn" Bandit points a finger at Juliet. She turns to Zoe and stares her up and down. Juliet could feel major tension. "...And you look like you could use a friend."
'Who does this chick think she is?!' Zoe raises her eyebrows. "Excuse me? What's that supposed to mean?" Juliet smiles through the awkwardness. There was no way she was going to try to break their fist fight. 'Oh god what if they have wand fight?!'
"No need to get all defensive! Are you against having friends or something?" Bandit chuckles and lightly pushes Zoe's shoulder before plopping down next to Juliet. Juliet can practically see the fire in Zoe's eyes. She sighs. "Gryffindor."
Bandit smirks. "Slytherin." She hisses like a curse. This was going to be a long train ride.
-------------------------------------
"Jannes, Harper." Professor Mcgonnagal called out. A red headed girl pushes her way through the crowd. "Jannes, Harper." Her loud heartbeats tune out the voices of all the other soon to be first years. The second professor Mcgonnagal plants the hat on Harper's head it starts talking. Harper can't hold in her excitement and grins as the sorting hat exclaims; "AHA! I can see your wit has gotten you thus far already, but your wisdom and creativity will define your future. The house of blue and bronze is where you belong. RAVENCLAW!"
-------------------------------------
Bandit was getting extremely bored. She knew she was going to be Gryffindor. Why stand there, surrounded by a bunch of people who she'll end up hating, when she could just save the sorting hat some time and energy. "Stone, Bandit." The girl strides through the crowd with pride. 'This won't take long!' She thinks to herself as Mcgonnagol places the dirty, mangled hat on her head.
"You have so much hidden in your heart. Sometimes the bravest are the ones who put others first. But sometimes they are the ones who care for themselves. Never forget what your priorities are.
GRYFFINDOR" The hat yells, theres a ringing in Bandit's ears now, but it wasn't nearly as bad as the ringing once her dad's concerts got finished. Frozen Dream was awesome. Bandit takes a seat and starts daydreaming about some of the concerts she's been to.
-------------------------------------
"Black, Zoe." Some of the students exchange shocked looks. Zoe practically floated to the sorting hat. Even though she hated school, she's always dreamt about being sorted and it was finally happening.
Professor Mcgonnagol lightly places the hat on Zoe head with a smile. She remembers her mother talking about how she had Professor Mcgonnagal's class with Zoe's father. The sorting hat interrupts her thoughts.
"Hmmmm. I remember your parents. Slytherin and a Ravenclaw." It starts out. Zoe starts to feel anxious.
"Please just sort me..." The sorting hat goes on. "Lots of confliction, dark past, possible dark future. Do not let your emotions and ambitions lead you to darker paths. Always remember that." He was confusing her now. "I don't underst-" She is interrupted by its booming voice.
"SLYTHERIN"
-------------------------------------
"Wayward, Juliet." Juliet's eyes widen. It's happening, for real. She walks through the remaining crowd of first years, muttering quiet "excuse me's" to anyone she touches. The Professor holding the hat looked intimidating. "Sit down, Miss Wayward." Juliet realizes she had been standing and staring at the old woman. A million thoughts run through Juliet's mind at once.
"Hmmm this one's obvious. You're very willing to sacrifice yourself and will do anything for those closest to you. But I see a little bit of ravenclaw. But lets go with... HUFFLEPUFF!" That was strangest word Juliet had ever heard. A strange word for a strange person.
-------------------------------------
Zoe took the open seat next to another first year, a blonde boy who is already making friends with the other Slytherins. She takes a long sip of the drink in her cup. Butterbeer! When they would go out, her mother used to buy it for her. Apparently her father liked it too.
"You're Regulus Black's daughter aren't you? I never knew he had a daughter! That makes you pureblood doesn't it?" The blonde boy starts to speak to her. The word pureblood makes several of the kids at the table turn their heads to focus on her. "Yeah, I'm pureblood." She replies, not sure what the big deal is or what 'pureblood' even means. Suddenly, the whole table starts to introduce themselves to her. The blonde boy next to her waits for the commotion to die down. "You're welcome. And I'm Draco Malfoy, if you haven't heard. I think we'll be great friends." He shakes her hand with a smirk and then devours his meal with the rest of the table.
-------------------------------------
Harper Jannes sat quietly at the Ravenclaw table listening to the older kids' conversation. The first years, not sure how to take everything in, ate their food in silence. It was nice to see, Harper wasn't the only shy one. She hated getting to know people because she was never sure if they were trustworthy. Hogwarts was amazing. Her father had always told her stories about it that he heard from his siblings. He never attended Hogwarts because he was a squib. When Harper's letter came, her father had never looked so proud. She started reading all her books early, the more she learned before, her father would say, would make her a better witch. Harper cringed every time she heard another student complain about Hogwarts, she definitely wasn't talking this for granted.
-------------------------------------
"It looks like we have Transfiguration first today, with Ravenclaw." Pansy, Zoe's roommate announces.
"Great! Sit by a Ravenclaw so you can copy them. You first years are lucky. Transfiguration is hard!" Gemma Farley, one of the older girls, hollers while slipping into her uniform. The other girls start to laugh while they get dressed too.
Once everyone is ready, all the first years scramble all over the castle trying to find where Transfiguration is. Finally, barely getting there on time, they flood into the room and find seats. Zoe finds a girl with fiery red hair, a Ravenclaw, and sits in the empty spot on the bench next to her. "I'm Zoe Black." Zoe whispers to her partner. "Harper Jannes."
Mcgonnagol starts her lesson about the spell Wingardium Leviosa. Zoe had seen her mother use it a million times. The class gets told to try it on their own. "Wingardium Leviosa!" Zoe says clearly, with a swish and flick. The feather doesn't move at all. She watches as Harper makes the feather move a tad. "My mom makes it look so easy!" Harper complains. "Same here! Bloody hell. I thought this was gonna be easy!" Zoe rants. They both try the spell again and again, trying to figure it out. "Wait I think I got it! We need to make our flick sharper." Harper exclaims. "Let's swish and flick in sync with the syllables too. Maybe that'll help too." Zoe adds. They both try the spell and cause their feathers to lift into the air. Both girls watch in awe.
Professor Mcgonnagol makes her way over to them. "You two work well together. Expect to be partners this year." She informs them. Zoe and Harper share a look of excitement. "Thank god. I was worried I was going to with a git!" Harper giggles. "Give it a while. You might change your mind." Zoe replies with a smirk before laughing until her stomach hurts.
-------------------------------------
Bandit was actually minding her own business for once, when a book came flying into her face. The impact sent her a few steps backwards. "Oh my god! I'm so sorry!!" Someone apologized sounding very alarmed. 'You should sound alarmed. I'm about to-' Bandit stopped planning her revenge. It was the girl she's met on the train, Juliet Wayward. "It's fine, Juliet." Bandit assured her. The Hufflepuff looked as if she was going to cry. "Are you sure?! You can hit me back-"
"It's fine. Do you know how many times I've been hit in the face at concerts?" Bandit tried to make her feel better, it was working because Juliet was following her now. "You go to concerts? My parents won't let me. They're to afraid I'll screw something up." Juliet explains to Bandit. Bandit stops walking. "What do you mean they think you'll screw something up?" Bandit couldn't believe her. "My parents are muggles. They had no idea about magic." Juliet sighs. "Your parents sound like assholes, Juliet. Don't worry I'll take you to one of my dad's concerts. He's in a band called Frozen Dream." Bandit chatters as she walked into her classroom. She had potions with the Slytherins, her least favorite class. Snape always favored them. "Well I guess I'll see you in Defense Against The Dark Arts!" Bandit called back to Juliet as she took her seat next to Hermione Granger.
-------------------------------------
Harper's eyes wandered the mysterious hallways of Hogwarts as she walks to History of Magic. As she takes in her surroundings, Harper spots a fellow redhead walking not far behind her, walking in the same direction. The girl smiled and introduced herself as Juliet Wayward, in which Harper responds by saying; "Harper Jannes. I say we should get on our WAYward to class." History of Magic itself was quite boring, but Harper and Juliet made jokes to themselves as Professor Binns droned on and on about goblins and whatnot. As class ends, Juliet taps Harper on her shoulder. "I hope i get to see you again, but in a class where we ACTUALLY do some sick magic stuff." Harper smirks and leaves the classroom, hoping the same thing.
-------------------------------------
Zoe's mom had taught her to fly a broomstick at a young age. She zoned out while Madam Hooch droned on an on about how to fly. The Slytherins had flying class with the Gryffindors. It was a chilly fall day, yet the Sun was still out. Zoe stood over a broom in between Malfoy and Pansy. She started to pay attention when the other students started to say "Up!" repeatedly. So far, no one got their brooms to move. Zoe rolled her eyes and watched as Bandit Stone screamed at her broomstick. "I'd like to see you try it, Slytherin!" She snapped from across the row. Zoe nodded her head. "Up." She said clear, concise, and stern; just as her mother taught her. The broom floated into her hand. She shot Bandit a smirk and an eyebrow raise.
Neville Longbottom tried to fly on his. That didn't end well. After he crashed and fell, Madam Hooch had to escort him to Madam Pomffrey. Malfoy noticed the Remembrall Neville dropped. He picked it up and flew off with it. While Draco hovered in the air Harry Potter demanded it back. Another bad idea. Malfoy flashed his famous smirk and flew off, causing Harry to fly after him. Zoe face palmed. Finally, Malfoy threw the ball and landed on the ground. Meanwhile Harry flew about a fifty foot dive and caught the ball before it hit the ground and shattered. Zoe looked at Harry with wide eyes. She couldn't believe that was his first time on a broom.
-------------------------------------
Bandit walked into another new class: Charms. The professor was a small man named Flitwick. As it happened, there was only one other person in the class, a Ravenclaw girl. The two of them smiled at each other.
"Hi I'm Bandit"
"Hey! I'm Harper"
The two girls talk, hitting it off when they discover the same smart ass sense of humor, as the rest of the class slowly filters in. In walks a girl with puffy brown hair, taking a seat in the front row.
"That's Hermione," Bandit whispers to her new friend. "She hates me and I do my best to roast her whenever possible."
Harper smiles. She too had no love for the goody two shoes Hermione. Once Professor Flitwick releases them to begin working on the lesson - the Color Changing Charm - the two really hit it off in a moment of saltiness.
"Bandit look! Hermione just messed up," Harper whispers. "Look at her hair" Bandit hisses back. "Is it puffier? That's what happens when she gets stressed out."
"Actually I think it's always like that!" The two girls say it at the same time and burst out laughing. Walking over, Flitwick notices that even through their chattiness these two girls had completed the lesson quickly and correctly.
"Nice job girls!" He says with a smile, holding up their mugs that had gone from blank white to bright cobalt blue. The bell rings and Bandit and Harper walk to lunch together, attracting looks (as usual) for Bandit's silver dyed hair and all her silver jewelry.
"Do you always get so much attention?" Harper is shocked.
"I try, sweetie," Bandit walks off with a smile and a "See you tomorrow!"
-------------------------------------
It was Saturday and Juliet wanted to have fun. The school year had really kicked in full force and during the week she was always stressing over her classes. Surprisingly, Juliet had made some good friends. Bandit was someone Juliet felt safe around, and she knew that Bandit would wreck anyone who was mean to her. Harper brought out the fun side of Juliet, the side that Juliet was always scolded for from her parents. Then there was Zoe who Juliet had no idea where they stood. The first day of school Zoe helped her get through everything that was the Wizard World, but she hung out with Malfoy, Crabbe, Goyle, and Pansy so much Juliet wasn't sure if they had changed her.
"Juliet! Over here!" Harper calls from across the courtyard. Juliet looks up and finds Harper and Bandit standing together. She jogs over to them. "Hey! Didn't see you over here!" Juliet smiles. "I might suggest getting some new glasses if those ones aren't working." Bandits snickers. Classic Bandit. The three all giggle at what Bandit calls "roasting".
Mid-conversation the girls are interupted. "Hey Harper! Hey Juliet! Hey Bandit!" Zoe chirps as she walks past them with her "friend group" The girls wave back and smile, but the mood changes when the rest of the group starts to notices who she was talking to. "Zoe don't talk to them. They're with a... Mudblood!" Pansy says the word mudblood like it puts a sour taste in her mouth. "Status doesn't matter to me." Zoe tries to explain. Draco turns to Juliet. "You. Do you know what you are?" He hisses. "A- a Hufflepuff?" Juliet stutters nervously. Zoe mentally face palms. "No. You're not a Hufflepuff. You're not even a true witch! You know why? Because you're a filthy mudblood!" Draco barks. The rest of the group snickers at her, except Zoe who is dead silent and looks as if she's seen a ghost. The group turns back in the direction they were walking in while Bandit and Harper desperately try to defend a teary eyed Juliet.
-------------------------------------
The first month of school was actually fun. Zoe had made good friends with everyone in her bunk room, Draco Malfoy, and his two sidekicks Crabbe and Goyle. Her favorite person was Pansy Parkinson. She knew all the gossip from all the houses and always shared it to Zoe. They always complained about the "Golden Trio" which consisted of Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger, and the famous Harry Potter. Hermione was her least favorite, probably everyone's least favorite. She was bossy and just plain annoying. During potions class Hermione and Bandit would bicker all the time, while the rest of the class giggled. Zoe's favorite fight was when Hermione was stressin
Tonight was the Halloween feast. Zoe heard it was the best feast of the year. All students were to be in the Great Hall at 6:00. Whenever everyone had to be in the Great Hall dinner was amazing.
"We've ought to go down early if we all want seats together." Pansy informs the rest of their friend group. Draco nods his head and stands up. Crabbe and Goyle immediately stand up after him. They were like his minions, more than his friends. "C'mon Zoe, we're all sitting together." Pansy calls as the group starts to leave. Zoe sets down her book and rushes to catch up with them. "I was actually going to sit with Harper-" Zoe tries to say. "You're kidding right? You're a pureblood! Don't you want to sit with us?" Draco questions her. "I always sit with you! We never get to sit where we want, so just this one time I'm going sit with Harper!" Zoe snaps, clearly annoyed at him. She spots Harper down a corridor and leaves her "friends" behind.
-------------------------------------
"Hey Zoe!" Harper waved as she saw her friend walking down the corridor. "Couldn't find your Slytherin Squad?" She joked. Zoe rolled her eyes and smiled. "I never get to sit with you! They can chill without their precious pureblood friend." Zoe explains. "Oh no! I, a half blood am not worthy of your pureblooded highness!" Harper mocked. Both girls giggled. "I hope you're fine with sitting with Bandit and Juliet. I promised I'd sit with them too." Harper mentioned. "Yeah that's fine. I should probably apologize to Juliet for that mudblood incident too." Zoe sighed.
The Great Hall is being flooded by all the students. Zoe followed Harper over to Bandit and Juliet. "What a surprise! Miss pureblood decided to join us! Or are you here to point out our blood status?" Bandit sneered. Zoe put her hands up. "No... I'm just here to sit with my friends. And I'm sorry about what happened in the courtyard. I wouldn't have said hi if I knew they were going to say those things." Zoe apologized. Bandit raised her eyebrows. "Wasn't expecting that!" Harper was surprised about how well that went.
The feast was amazing. There was every food that the girls had ever dreamed of eating and it was delicious. It was also nice to get to know Zoe a little better, without her Slytherin friends pestering her every action. Harper never knew about Zoe's dad passing away. Once they Zoe could open up to them, she was hilarious. At one point they were all imitating the golden trio, laughing their heads off while they joked. Harper also learned about Bandit's fun life on the road. Juliet complained about her parents when they asked her about the muggle world, but then told them about public school and cars. "You mean you don't use floo powder?!" Zoe asked in horror. "No. What's that?" Juliet replied, clearly confused. "WHAT DO YOU MEAN! MUGGLES DON'T HAVE FLOO POWDER?!" Bandit was apalled. "You're telling me you drive or... Walk?!" Harper was so disgusted. "Yeah. That's how we get around." Juliet told them, not even phased. Zoe laughed and put her head in her hands.
-------------------------------------
The second half of the feast was a disaster. Professor Quirrel came sprinting into the Great Hall screaming troll. Everyone was forced to evacuate in a calm matter, but the evacuation was nowhere near calm. Everyone was pushing and shoving, and screaming as they did so.
Once she was safely back in her common room, Bandit plopped on a couch and opened a book. "Harry! Where's Hermione?!" Ron Weasley asked in alarm. Harry walked over to him and they started chattering quietly. Bandit rolled her eyes. Hermione was probably off thinking she could fight the troll. She sighed as Harry and Ron ran out of the common room. "Idiots." Bandit whispers loud enough so only she could hear.
-------------------------------------
The moment Professor Quirrel yelled about the troll Juliet began a living nightmare. There were way too many people all running around in different directions. Juliet got lost at least three times due to the confusion and misheard information. She finally found the group of Hufflepuffs being lead by the Head Boy and Girl. Juliet just tried to not fall behind. She had no friends to talk to on the short walk to the commons so she brainlessly followed the mob.
Juliet felt the rush of relief when she got into the commons. She was greeted with an earthy scent along with honey and occasionally a whiff of whatever is cooking in the kitchen. The bright bee-like colors put her in a slightly better mood. Cacti, tendrils, ferns and various other plants stood on wooden shelves carved precisely to match the curve of the walls. This room felt more like home than her actual house.
Juliet rushed to the round, highly polished, honey-colored wooden door that lead to the girls' dormitories. She walked briskly to the bed on the very end of the hallway. It was a comfortable wooden bedstead, covered in patchwork quilts which were quite warm. At the foot Juliet reaches for her book called Outlander written by Diana Gabaldon. She held the book firmly to mask her nervousness of going out where everybody was talking. The only reason she did this was to make it seem like she wasn't so lonely. Bandit advised her to do this so she could make a few friends in her house instead of locking herself up in the dormitories because Juliet got too nervous to approach people so maybe they would approach her.
Nobody did by the end of the night but probably because Juliet looked busy. 'I guess I may actually have to try to socialize if I want friends.' she thought, 'Friends can wait.' Juliet moped back to the dormitories and into her soft, comfy bed.
