A new life, a new beginning

We lived up in the mountains, in a small valley, so when the police men blind folded us and we

soared Thur the air, the air was cold and thin. I had to snuggle up to Zena as we flew thru the air,

just to keep warm.

Thankfully, after an hour or two I felt the dragon slow in to the familiar landing. After we were

on the ground and they removed our eye folds I looked around. We we surrounded by long rolling

hills of yellow grass that went up to my knees, swaying in the wind. To the north was a large

mountain range, but I could tell by the looks of them that they were not our hometown mountains.

The police men then helped me into my coat, shoulder my backpack, attached the handle in

the sheath around my waist and slung the stick string thing across my back.  They began to tell me

I was never aloud back and if we followed them, the punishment would be worse than banishment.

They then wished me good luck and flew away to the south in till they disappeared over the horizon.

I watched them intill I could not see them anymore before turning around and sighing heavily.

Zena watched me cautiously, a few feet away before speaking in my mind saying, "Are you mad at

me?" "No I'm not mad at you I'm actually happy to get away from there." I said out loud, my voice

cracking some what. "I'm sorry." She whispered both in my head and out loud.

I chuckled. "Don't be." We stood there for a few minutes, as I blinked away the few tears that

had escaped. I sighed heavily, then said, "Alright, we better see what's in this pack." I slipped off the

backpack and crouched down, opening it up and laying out the contents: a sleeping bag, a few

large bottles of water, Iodine, a few dozen sandwiches, about five apples, two packs of jerky and a

lighter.

"It's not much." said Zena, peering over my shoulder. "I know. We'll have to find a town to stake

out at for a little while." I said, packing back up the supplies. I stood up, hoisting the backpack on my

shoulder and looked around. Now, if I were a town where would I be? I thought, not really talking

to Zena. Zena lifted her nose in the air and took a deep breath. "I can smell a faint trail of people

over by those mountains and something else, but I can't tell what it is." She said out loud. I nodded

and started to walk towards the mountains.

We walked a few hours, having found a trail and followed it toward the mountains.

Occasionally, we would meet a few travelers heading in the opposite direction. As soon as they

saw me they would go to the opposite side of the trail and keep there head down. It was confusing

and strange, like they were giving me respect or something. Zena would often swoop over to the

and they would cringe as she tried to talk to them, asking them questions.

Zena was very care free as we continued our trek, swooping in the sky, doing loopdy loops and

at complete ease. She would sometimes dissapear into the grass only to pop out again with a

small rodent in her mouth. She also became very talkative ranting on in my mind about how dreary

our old home and life had been and how for years she had wanted to leave from under her mothers

protective eyes. I laughed at somethings she said and was amazed at what open space could do to

her.

After a while I rode Zena full size all the way to the edge of the mountain. It was dark by then

and Zena could barley keep her eyes open from all the excitment and exercise, so we decided to

sleep. I ate a few sandwiches, unrolled my sleeping bag and snuggled up to Zena, who remained

full size to keep me warm since we didn't have a fire. As I started to drift to sleep I re caped the

whole day. As I got to the memory of my mother however, tears welled in my eyes. I hated her and

everything but she was my own mother, the person who had brought me into this life. I tried to hold

back the sobs but they came thick and fast and didn't stop and eventually I fell asleep crying,

listing to Zena hum a song that I had never heard before.
