Liza let a puff of angry air out as the door swung behind her, coldly shutting her out. Again.
It was the second audition she'd gone to this week, and she was pretty sure it was also the second one she'd botched.
Come on, Liz, she muttered to herself as she shook her head. You've got to try harder if you don't want to get stuck serving burgers and shakes for the rest of your life.
Sighing, she crossed the street with the rest of the New York crowd.
She had no idea what was wrong. She thought she had the voice for it, she'd graduated with a degree in musical theatre, top of her class. People had always told her she had a gift.
Were they wrong?
She barely noticed where her feet were taking her until she was standing in front of her apartment.
"Afternoon, Miss Elizabeth." It was Tony, the friendly maintenance worker who cleaned up around the apartment. He seemed to enjoy his job enough, but Liza knew he had other passions. She just had yet to pry them out of him.
"Hey, Tony." He was good at reading her - too good, almost. He frowned, tilting her chin up with his non-plastic-gloved hand.
"Let me guess. Another audition?" She nodded, feeling the tears threatening to spill. Why did it seem like she was she always about to cry in front of him?
He smiled, tugging at her ponytail. "Don't worry, Liza. You just need to find a company that appreciates your talent as much as I do."
Liza watched him go with a trace of a smile before pressing the elevator button.***
Liza flopped down on her bed and flipped open her laptop. With the fairy lights hanging around the bed frame emitting a soft warm glow and the book-scented candle wafting a soothing scent into the room, she was already feeling much more relaxed.
"Alright, Liza," she muttered, "what auditions are open for you?"
She flipped through the online list that always kept her updated on open auditions. It was crazy how many parts opened up that she didn't qualify for, whether in looks or in singing ability.
She clicked refresh three times before huffing out a sigh. Nothing. Again.
She was just about to power off her laptop when she heard the ping of an email.
Liza frowned. Her parents barely emailed her, and ever since she'd graduated college nobody from school contacted her except for a couple of people here and there. The only people that talked to her were her best work friend and Tony, who could see her whenever he wanted. She was signed up for a few audition newsletters but they didn't usually send out emails this late in the afternoon.
She opened up her email folder, apprehensive at what she would find but half expecting it to be a scam.
It was from the audition site. Liza clicked on it, a feeling bubbling over in her chest.Re: ATTENTION ALL ACTRESSES!
Good afternoon,
To all female, 20-30 actresses in the NYC area, Hamilton: An American Musical is hosting an audition for the role of Angelica Schuyler as a sick double or to step in at any time when the actress is unable to perform.
Auditions will begin in two weeks' time at the Richard Rodgers Theatre (July 1-31). See the Richard Rodgers Theatre for times and more information. She was almost too stunned to speak.
The feeling in her stomach spread to her toes, fingertips, mind. She laughed - something she'd failed to do in who knows how long - and flipped back onto the bed, gazing at the ceiling in joy.
Hamilton!
How often she walked to work listening to those words! How wonderfully mastered she'd gotten the majority of those raps, memorized to perfection!
How that role was meant for her!
Liza stood up and ran to the cloudy mirror in her little bathroom. Light brown skin, dark brown eyes, near-black hair that fell in messy curls to her back.
At last a role she fit.
Liza ran to the window and looked at the brightly lit streets. She could almost make out Broadway, shimmering brightly, with all the colors and billboards and signs that she longed to be a part of.
She was so very close.
Two weeks.
She smiled. So very close._____________
