It was nearing 5 am and I still hadn't even thought about sleep. I was lying in bed with the white teddy bear he bought for our one month together. My comforter was pulled all the way up to my neck. I had a firm grip on one of his t-shirts left behind, like someone at any minute was going to come and take it from me. My tears ducts had cried themselves empty and there was a rock and roll group playing an all-night concert in my head. No wonder sleep was no on my radar.
The huge box radio on my night stand, wasn't playing anymore music. I had it on repeat, playing a slow jams CD, but after ten or so repeats, I had-had enough. So, I turned to my cable music station for a change of pace. Channel 410 played music from the 90's, perfect. Hopefully this will lull me off to sleep.
I quickly realized though, that the music was having the opposite effect on me: Can u stop the rain, I can't tell you why, Stay with me, Always. Yea okay, here comes the hurricane of tears again, DAMN! Baby where are you? Finally, my tears started to fade and my eyelids became heavy. I could hear myself breathing deep as my body sank into the mattress. I felt my worries become a distant memory, as I let go and drifted to sleep. The smell of his T-shirt made him feel close to me, even though he was miles.
The sound of my alarm clock woke me up. I barely opened my eyes, before I felt small hands tugging on my blanket.
"Mommy, I wet the bed again." He sobbed, rubbing his eyes.
"Are you serious?" I said getting upset, before I realized he was already crying. So I calmed down. There was no sense in the both of us being upset. "OK okay clam down and go and turn on your shower baby. Don't worry about it." I managed, as he walked off to the bathroom, sobbing the whole way.
"Mom, Marquis Peed in my bed!" Chamani screamed.
"What, what did you say?"
"Marquis peed in my bed!" She screamed again, stomping down the hall towards my room. She stood in my doorway with her hand on her hip, pointing towards their shared bedroom.
I sat up in my bed and rubbed my eyes. There was nothing to do but laugh. I wasn't laughing at the situation. But, her expression. She was seriously pissed. Understandably upset, but it was hilarious! I'm glad Marquis was in the shower at that moment or she might have beaten him down. I threw the covers off of me and draped my feet over the side of the bed and into my slippers. There was a chill in the morning air that sent shivers through my body as I stood up. I reached for my Animal print robe off the armchair across from my bed, as I walked out my bedroom towards my children's shared room.
"Mom come on, hurry up." She said, practically dragging me down the hall, by the hand. "Look!" She was pointing at the large wet spot in the middle her twin bed.
"Why was he in your bed anyway young lady?"
"He had a nightmare."
"Okay Chamani, don't worry I got this. Get your things and get ready to take a shower. Tell your brother its time to come on out. Don't hit him either, he already feels bad enough."
"He should, I hate baby brothers!" She sighed, stomping to the bathroom. I could hear her yelling at Marquis to get out, so she could get in.
I pulled the sheets off her bed and tossed them onto the floor. I went into their bathroom and pulled the bottle of Lysol spray out and a clean cloth, wet it and returned to the bedroom.
"Marquis hurry up and get dressed young man." I said to him. I sprayed her mattress liberally and wiped it down. 'Mental note, she is going to need a new mattress. This is the third incident.' I said quietly. 'It might be time to figure out how to get an extra bedroom.' I sighed and pulled the bottle of Freebreeze from under Marquis' bed and sprayed it on her mattress as well as throughout the room. I paused when I turned to replace the bottle under the bed. It sounded like I heard the front door open.
