Rivers

I put my hand in a river
And my mistakes disappeared
The scars washed off like
Crayola markers and
The pain left with them

As rain kept falling
My fingers grasped every drop
Trying to fix every imperfection
Until the memories faded away

I put my hand in a river but
There wasn't enough water
To repair these damaged hands that
Only seem to cause more pain

I put my hand in a river and
Screamed at the sky to
Solve all the problems that
Didn't make sense

I put my hand in a river and
Scrubbed until it was raw so
No one could say I didn't try and
Take back what I'd done

I put my hand in a river and
Tried to understand just how
Crazy I was to think I
Could do this

I put my hand in a river and
Finally realized that my scars were
Written in sharpies and the
Pain was too

I laid down in the rain
Let the drops hit my skin and
Waited for the mistakes to fade
Until my hands were blank
