Warnings: some angst, language, violence, and abuse as well as mentions of sexual abuse. this one is long af, like almost 6,000 words, I got a bit carried away with this one. Italics are events that took place about a year before Bucky went off to war.
"Hey Steve, does y/n seem a little off to you today?" Bucky asked his small friend quietly, hoping you wouldn't hear their conversation as you were busy waiting on the table across from them at the diner.
"She seems quieter today I guess, how late was she out with her boyfriend?" Steve asked curiously.
"I caught her coming home after midnight. When she saw I waited up for her, she didn't say anything, she just went straight to her room." Bucky told Steve as what happened last night played in his mind once again. Once he turned the light on he had seen your bloodshot eyes and tear stained face, but didn't have enough time too look at the rest of you before you had locked yourself in your room.
"Do you think something happened between them?" Steve asked as he now looked back at you as well, looking for anything that would give him a clue as to why you were acting different.
"I don't know, but I plan on finding out tonight." Bucky told him as he saw you making your way toward their table.
"What can I get you two trouble makers?" You asked the pair of friends with your best fake smile.
"How about an answer as to why you came home so late last night? Or why you had been crying?" Bucky asked calmly with a fake smile to match yours.
"Hey Buck, right now might not be the best time to-"
"Can it Steve." Bucky snapped at his friend, something he never did unless there was something really bothering him. "Well y/n, I'm waiting."
"I lost track of time." You lied, hoping he would believe it.
"Try again." He told you calmly as he pretended to look over his menu.
You were about to finally be honest with Bucky, that is until you saw your boyfriend walk through the doors of the diner. He had a terribly angry look in his eyes, but only you would be able to pick up on that. "Bucky, I'm working right now. Can this please wait till I get home?" You pleased quietly, trying not to draw your boyfriends attention.
"Fine, but I don't want anything other than the truth." He told you sternly, receiving a quick nod from you before you went off to go place the order for their regulars.
"Hey Buck, what's he doing here?" Steve asked as he nodded in the direction of your boyfriend who was scanning the diner, most likely looking for you.
Bucky took notice of how his fists were clenched tight and how his eyebrows were slightly furrowed. He always had a bad feeling about the guy, but today it was like a million red flags were being raised. "Not sure, but if he ever hurts her, he's gonna have to deal with me." He replied with a bit of anger in his tone.
"Yeah, and me." Steve added confidently, causing Bucky to turn back to him with a small smirk.
"Shut up punk." Bucky lightly laughed.
After the diner, Bucky had gone home to wait for you, the only problem was that your shift had ended three hours ago and you still weren't home. By this time Bucky knew exactly where you were, and now he was going to come and get you himself. In the past few months your boyfriend had done nothing but cause trouble for you, keeping you out late, keeping you away from your family as often as possible, but Bucky knew that if it was up to you, you would be home right now spending time with him and your mother after your long day at work.
