The next couple of hours flew by without any sort of recognition on Babi's part. She didn't know what had happened or how it had started. All she was sure of was that whatever was going on was for her own good.
When Babi finally came to and soaked in her surroundings, she realized that she was alone in a spare bedroom in the Rush household. Taking a deep breath, she closed her eyes and leaned back against the head board. In a single moment everything came rushing back. Her mom, the trailer, her stash, everything.
A flood of emotions engulfed her chest. How could this happen?
"Babi?" the voice instantly calmed her nerves.
"Max." Babi smiled, without opening her eyes. She sensed him as he walked closer to her, taking one step at a time.
Tempest wasn't home. She had to leave for an 'emergency' practice with the rest of the cheerleaders. The football game had been moved from Saturday night to Friday, due to some complications with scheduling. Babi remembered some apologizing and a little bit of crying, but not much else. She kind of dozed off afterwards.
Alek? Where was he?
"He said he had to take care of some things. Something about needing to fix something. I'm not really sure, he didn't say much after." Max responded, as if reading Babi's mind. He say her physically relax.
"Do you want me to get you something?" he asked, looking down at Babi.
He was scared. What if he said something wrong? What if she misinterpreted him? He didn't want to hurt her, but he didn't know what to say. Not really. What could he say? What could he do to make it all better?
Maybe if he just-if he just reached out? Maybe if he touched her hair and possibly caressed her cheek?
Before he could stop himself, he was on the bed, sitting next to Babi. Her blue eyes were now open and alert. He did just that. He reached out and softly touched-caressed. Babi, feeling on some sort of high, she leaned in. Her eyes once more fluttered closed.
"Babi-" Max started, but was hushed by the young girl in a matter of seconds.
"I know...I know" she spoke softly, not wanting him to remove her hand. Secretly praying he wouldn't remove it. "We should-"
"I know." Max spoke, his voice both rough and jagged.
"But...maybe just this once-" Babi asked, leaning in a little closer than before.
What was she doing? This wasn't right, but the loud thumping in her chest and the ringing in her ears told her otherwise. Just once more. It would be the last time...the real last time.
"Just once?" he asked, licking his bottom lip the way he had since he was in high school. It was an action that was sure to bring all the panties dropping.
Babi nodded and leaned in a little more. Their noses touched, his thumb tracing her chin as he tilted her head upwards. She waited and held her breath for a second and then...then their lips touched. They touched at first softly, then as their lips found a synchronized melody that they could both dance to. It was comfortable...dare they feel...natural?
It wasn't until her hand met the side of his scruffy face, that he stopped the magical kiss. It was even better than than their first.
"Don't...please don't. Not yet." She asked, closing her eyes as their foreheads rested on one another.
Once more, Max licked his lips. He tried to clear his throat, but he couldn't. All he wanted was to kiss her again. Kiss her and never stop.
"Please." she begged.
He didn't need to be asked again. This time when he kissed her, he made sure to pour out all of the things he couldn't say...wouldn't say into the kiss. This way, there would be no question as to what it was that he really felt for her. All she had to do was try and understand what he was trying to say.
"We are getting a divorce." Max blurted out, breaking the kiss. He didn't know why he said it...no, actually he did. But never in his 33 years of life, had he ever felt like more of an ass. She was an 18 year old girl with a crush. She wasn't in love, nor was she going to ruin her friendship with his daughter. This meant nothing to her.
"What?" Babi asked, trying to calm her breathing. She understood exactly what he was saying, but she wanted to hear it once more so she could do what she most wanted without feeling guilty.
As Max searched for the right words to say next, he felt like everything was stupid. He couldn't very well say 'Nothing' and expect her to be happy with that. Instead, he just went with it. Maybe he could play it off some other way.
"Marie Ann and I are getting a divorce. She is seeing someone else and I...We made this decision a long time ago, but it wasn't until the beginning of this month that we got the papers. By next month, I wont be tied to her." he smiled, pulling away from Babi, as she did the same.
Babi didn't know what to say, but she knew that allowing the smile that was clawing at her face was probably not the most appropriate thing.
"Congratulations" she said, realizing that that wasn't much better.
Max however found the single word quiet amusing. He roared with laughter, showing off his sexy dimples and pearly white teeth.
"Thanks corazón. I appreciate it." he said between laughter until there was silence. But even the silence wasn't enough to keep the smile off Babi's face.
It was the first time that Babi had ever heard him laugh like that. It was perfect.
Clearing his throat, Max stood up and took a deep breath.
"Tempest will be back soon, okay? I'll bring you something to eat. You just stay here and rest a while." he smiled, taking a step back from the bed.
"Okay." Babi smiled, leaning back against the head board. Before he walked away, Babi reached out and held onto his hand.
Max waited for her to say something but she didn't, she just looked into his eyes and smiled.
"I'm happy to hear about the divorce...you deserve to be happy. You know, with whoever it is that...you know, you want to be happy with." she smiled, softly rubbing her thumb over his hand. He squeezed her hand and chuckled quietly
"Believe me...I will be." he promised and then softly let of of her hand to prepare her something to eat.
