Chapter one:
-Harper-
I sit in the back of the class, quiet as usual. I was early, which wasn't any different. Everyone is always late or exactly on time because they socialize in the hall. I don't because I'm not exactly what you call the 'talking type'.
The teacher, Ms. Walsh, walks towards me.
"Hey, Harper. You going to answer a question today?" She smiles at me and I shake my head."Why? You are so smart. You always pass your tests with an A. Why do you never put that knowledge to words?"
"I'm just shy. If I say something wrong, everyone will laugh. They can't laugh at me if I write it down." I say, almost a whisper. She had to lean in a little to hear me. The bell rung, and everyone piled into class.
"Class is starting. I have to go. At least try to answer a question, please." she sighs and heads back to her desk.
I noticed Calum staring at me from afar. Believe it or not, but we used to be friends. After I watched a robber kill my mom and dad, I isolated everyone out of my life. I had many friends. I was popular. Notice the past tense? Calum wasn't popular until he bacame famous. Even when he was unpopular, he was my best bud.
People seemed to find it confusing why I hung out with him more than anyone else, just because he wasn't 'cool enough'. I never got a chance to hang out with popular him. When I isolated everyone, he tried days to get me to talk to him. Then, he gave up. I started making you youtube videos with Luke and Michael. Then, they added Ashton. Louis discovered them. He then became popular. I guess you know the story.
"What is circumference?" Ms. Walsh asked the class. Nobody raised their hands. "If nobody answers, I guess I'm going to have to give you a homework assignment so you can learn it." She said. She looked around the class, sighing. "Okay, then. I guess you guys have home wo-" She was cut off be my hesitantly raising my hand.
The class filled with whispers such as 'Oh my gosh', 'she's raising her hand', 'she's going to speak', 'I miss her voice, 'I forgot what she sounded like', 'I miss being her friend', 'I miss her, completely'.
"Yes, Harp-larp." she smiled, using her nickname for me.
"It is the enclosing boundary of a curved geometric figure." I said, but put it in different words as everyone looked confused. "Also known as the distance around the circle."
Ms. Walsh smiles at me.
"You are absolutely correct." she smiled and winked at me. "Can you tell me the formula?"
"It is pi times diameter."
"What is pi and how do you find diameter?"
"Pi is 3.14 and diameter is radius times 2."
"How do you find radius?"
"The diameter divided by 2."
"Which line is the radius and which is the diameter?"
"The line that is the diameter is the line that goes all the way through the circle. The line of the radius only goes through half."
"What is the formula for area?"
"Pi times radius squared."
"Where is all this confedence coming from?" she smirked.
"Bigger the risks, higher the payment." I smirked at Calum.
"Go big or go home." he smirked back. This is a one time thing. Just because I answered questions, doesn't mean I'm going to keep on doing it.
I stayed quiet the rest of class time. The bell rung and everyone left.
"Harper and Calum. Could you plese stay for a little?" Ms. Walsh asked. "Calum, you have been failing all of your classes. Harper is your new tutor, if she doesn't mind. Do you mind, Harper?"
Hell yeah, I mind.
"No ma'am. I don't mind at all." I say in a gentle voice.
"Okay, then. Here's you new tutor." She said to Calum.
We both walk out of class together.
"Why did you do it?" He asks.
"Do what?" I asked, almost a whisper.
"We both know that you didn't want to tutor me."
"You don't know that." I mumbled, a small smile playing on my lips.
"I know that you hate bullies, canoloupe, when your food touches, hot sauce, when people don't apologize, vomit, cheaters, rude people, when people kill your vibe, obnoxiously loud people, annoying people, people who can't take a joke, when teachers volunteer students to do things that they don't want to do, when teachers eat in-front of their students, people who brag, people who talk too much, and most of all, when you have to tutor people." he rambles, as I silently laugh.
"Okay, okay. I get it. I hate the world." I playfully nudge him, as he laughs. I really do miss him.
"I know you do.Now, come on. We are going to be late." He smiles. I look at the clock and my eyes widened.
"LESS THAN A MINUTE!" Mr. Crawford laughs, staring right at us.
"I'll race you there." I smirk and we both dart through the hall, into the classroom. I win by a second.
I head to my usual spot in the back. Suprisingly, everyone I used to be friends with sit in the back with me.
The whole class period, Mr.Crawford picks on me. I kind of zoned out in the middle of class.
"Harper!" Mr. Crawford gasps.
"What?" I asked.
"I was just having a conversation with you." He said.
"You were?" I asked and he nodds. "Did I respond?"
"Yea." he nodds, "and you said some pretty hateful things."
"I did?"
"Yea and you really hurt my feelings." He said in a 'duh' voice. What?
"Did I really?" I whispered to the girl beside me, April. She used to be my friend. She nodded, a smile played on her lips.
"Oh my gosh. I'm so sorry." I say, eyes wide and mouth gaped. Mr.Crawford started laughing.
"I'm just joking, Haper the marker." He said, using his nickname for me. It was lunch time.
"Hey. Want to sit with us?" April asked.
"Sure." I whispered, uncertain.
We all get our lunch sit down.
When everyone noticed it was me sitting with them, they tackeled me in a hug.
"We really missed you!" They all said.
"I missed y'all too."
