All photos were handed out at the end of the next day, considering how fast everything is. Mom waited for all our pictures when we walked in. I hand her my single photo, keeping the picture of Isaac and I in my hands.
"Hey, why does Kaylin have another picture?" Ethan shouts, jumping from the couch and running at me. He grabs the folder, whipping it out and showing it to my brothers. "Ooh! Does Kaylin have a boyfriend?"
I snatch it from them, cheeks flushed a right shade of Crimson. Slowly I walk back to my room, eyeing my many brothers. Some were smiling and some looked ready to murder and hide the body half way into America.
"No, we're just friends– sorta." I mumble as an after thought before running into my room and locking the door. My eyes snap towards my computer and I groan loudly. It was do tomorrow, and I was so close to finishing but I couldn't get the ending right!
I throw my bag to my bed and throw off my hoodie, sitting at my desk and opening the file I needed. The single chapter pulls up, the title making me inspired.
The girl, confused, turns to the boy. He was smiling at her, but she could see the pain in his eyes. She hugs him, tears streaming down her face.
She was leaving. Right after they had finally expressed their feeling towards one another. Katlin was leaving now, after discovering she was not just an ordinary girl.
Ordinary, a word everyone described her with, including herself- and now she wasn't.
Ordinary was hardly the word for her anymore.
I hit the save button, sending it to my teacher with a satisfied smile. I look at my clock, surprised at how long it took to write the ending. Dinner would be ready any minute now.
Water gun in hand I walk from my room and to the kitchen. The house is quiet, which is extremely strange. I look in dad's office, the basement and all the rooms for anyone but no ones there. Finally I walk to the sitting room. I stop when I hear muffled voices over a phone. I peak in; everyone was gathered, sitting around and looking troubled.
Mum was on the phone, speaking wildly to someone. "She's only fourteen! Yes, I am aware of that– what- no, I see. Give me time to tell her before you show up. She doesn't know? Of course she doesn't know! She's fourteen! She's a child Morrice! I-I understand. Of course, tell her I said hi will you? It was nice speaking with you. Yes, goodbye."
Mum sighs and turns to dad, sitting down next to him. My brothers looked sad, but about what? And who were they talking about? I walk away, confused.
Half way to my room Kevin's voice stops me. "Kaylin–? Where you listening to our conversation." He seemed nervous when I looked back, the whole family standing behind him.
I nod nervously. "Yeah, I did. Who were you talking about?" I walk past them to the dining room, sitting as mom sets food down. Everyone files in, looking nervous and uncomfortable. I quirk a brow, staring at them strangely.
Mum sits down, handing me a plate with food in it. The room was filled with an intense silence that made me squirm in discomfort. "You dear," mum finally sighs.
"What about me? I'm not failing any of my classes this year. Right?" Last year I had managed to fail four different classes, and spent most of my summer making the lost terms up. It wasn't a fun way to spend what was supposed to be freedom.
"No," mum looks around nervously. "But, in a few days we'll have a visitor, and we need you to stay home. Some– important things will be happening." My eyes roam the table, watching my brothers, they wouldn't meet my eyes, and they were all hunched over and looking sad almost.
"Okay, what about? If it concerns me shouldn't I know?"
Mum sighs again. "Maybe tomorrow. It been a long day and you have school. For now let's enjoy dinner."
Little did I know that this would be one of my last dinners with my family.
