"Each of you comes here today hopeful, wanting in on the game. A month ago, you were in med school being taught by doctors. Today you are the doctors. The seven years you spend here as a surgical resident will be the best and worst of your life. You will be pushed to the breaking point.
Look around you. Say hello to your competition. Eight of you will switch to an easier specialty.
Five will crack under the pressure. Two of you will be asked to leave. This is your starting line.
This is your arena. How well you play, that's up to you."

Hearing those words on my first day made me not only excited, but nervous. I looked around me, I saw a guy, medium height, bigger nose, short hair. A girl, blonde hair, a model's body, tall, slim. A girl, black, wavy hair, shorter, of Korean ethnicity, looks hopeful. A girl, medium height, strawberry-blonde hair, blue eyes. Another guy, bigger build, short brown hair, kind of like a buzz cut, brown eyes, short beard, determined looking. Then there was me. Medium height, brown hair, blue eyes, slim body, hair tied up in a ponytail with a pair of my lucky running shoes on. This is it, the day I become a surgeon.

We headed out of the room we were in and we were showed to the locker room. I got changed into the light blue scrubs we were given and saw people having conversations like they knew each other for years. "Hey, I'm Alex but you can call me Karev." the guy beside me said. He was one of the guys I saw in the room we were all in together. He's the one with the buzz cut . "Darcy Sloan." I said smiling and shaking his hand. "You nervous?" he asked getting things out of his locker. "Not really, you?" I asked tying my pants up. "Nah. I've been ready for a while." he said smirking. "Don't get too cocky there, Karev." I said grabbing a small notebook and a pen from my locker. "Yeah." he huffed, laughing a little bit. "See you later." he said as his name was called. I smiled and sat on the bench. I looked over to my right and saw the tall blonde, the medium height guy, the black wavy haired girl and the blue-eyed girl all talking. "Grey, Stevens, O'Malley, Yang and Sloan." someone said from the doorway. I stood up and followed them out the door. "Bailey?" the black haired girl asked. "End of the hall." the guy said. "That's the Nazi?" the black haired girl asked as we walked towards a short, African-American woman standing at the counter. "I thought the Nazi would be a guy." the short haired guy said. "I thought the Nazi would be... the Nazi." the blue-eyed girl said. "Maybe it's professional jealousy. Maybe she's brilliant, and they call her Nazi because they're jealous. Maybe she's nice." the tall blonde said tying her hair up. "Let me guess, you're the model." the black haired girl said.

The blonde haired girl gave the black haired girl a look and turned to Dr. Bailey, extending her hand out with a smile. "Hi, I'm Isobel Stevens, but everyone calls me Izzie." she said smiling.
Bailey looked Izzie up and down and didn't shake her hand. " I have five rules. Memorise them. Rule number one, don't bother sucking up, I already hate you, that's not gonna change. Trauma protocol, phone lists, pagers. Nurses will page you, you answer every page at a run. A run, that's rule number two. Your first shift starts now and lasts forty-eight hours. You're interns, grunts, nobodies, bottom of the surgical food chain, you run labs, write orders, work every second night till you drop and don't complain! On call rooms. Attendings hog them, sleep when you can, where you can, which brings me to rule number three, if I'm sleeping, don't wake me, unless your patient is actually dying. Rule number four, the dying patient better not be dead when I get there, not only would you have killed someone, you would have also woke me for no good reason, we clear?" Dr. Bailey said as we gathered the things off the counter and followed her around. The blue-eyed girl raised her hand and looked at Bailey nervous. "Yes." Bailey said looking at her. "You said five rules. That was only four." she said as Bailey's pager went off. "Rule number five, when I run, you run. Out of my way!" Bailey said as we ran down the hall and towards the room we were paged to.
