It's all about the lines. The finish line at the end of residency, waiting in line for a chance at the operating table, and then, there's the most important line. The line separating you from the people you work with. It doesn't help to get too familiar. To make friends. You need boundaries between you and the rest of the world. Other people are far too messy. It's all about the lines. Drawing lines in the sand, and praying like hell no one crosses them.
I woke up and got ready. A tanktop, sweater, leggings, lucky running shoes, put my hair in a ponytail, brushed my teeth, washed my face, grabbed a coffee and a granola bar and I'm ready to go. I got to the hospital at the time I was supposed to and went to the locker room where most people were. I walked over to my locker and Alex was at his, almost like he was waiting for me... "Morning." I said smiling as I set my things in my locker and grabbed some clean scrubs. "Morning." he said looking at me. I changed into the scrubs and ate my granola bar and drank my coffee while talking to Alex. I looked around and saw 'ROOMMATES WANTED' posters plastered everywhere. I walked over to one and saw that Meredith was looking for roommates. "Sloan!" I heard Bailey yell. I turned around and saw Bailey standing at the door of the locker room. "Morning Dr. Bailey." I said grabbing my coffee and walking over to her. "You're on Sheppard's service today." she said as we walked out of the locker room. "Sounds good. Where is he?" I asked, throwing my coffee into a garbage can as we walked past Meredith talking to a blonde woman. "OR board." she said stopping to grab some charts. "Sounds good. Thank you Dr. Bailey. Page me if you need me." I said smiling before heading to the OR board. "Good morning Dr. Sheppard, Dr. Burke." I said as I got to the OR board. "Good morning Dr. Sloan. Have you seen George O' Malley anywhere?" Burke asked, turning to look at me. "Actually, I haven't seen him yet today. If I do, I will let him know you're looking for him." I said smiling. "Thank you." He said before walking away. "What would you like me to do, Dr. Sheppard?" I asked looking at Derek. "I want you to go find Meredith, tell her I need to talk to her, then go find George and take him to Burke. After you do that, I would like you to meet me at Dr. Webber's office." Derek said looking at me. "Okay. Will do." I said smiling before heading off to go find Meredith.
I found Meredith in a hallway with Izzie and George. "Meredith. Derek wants to talk to you. And George, I'm supposed to take you to see Burke." I said once I got to them. "Okay. Tell him I'll go see him after I see Bailey." Meredith said. I nodded and grabbed George's arm, taking him to find Burke. "Ow, ow!" George said before I let go of his arm. "I was barely even touching you." I said looking at him. "Whatever. Why does Burke need me? Did he say?" George asked. "Nope, but he's right there." I said pointing to where Burke was standing, talking to a nurse once we turned the corner. "Thanks." George said. I smiled and headed to Dr. Webber's office, getting stopped by Alex on my way. "You busy tonight? After our shift is over here?" he asked looking at me. "Uh, not that I know of. I might go to the track to do some running with Derek but that's about it." I said. "Wanna go out for a drink after then?" he asked, smirking a little bit. "We'll see Karev. If you can keep your damn eyes off my chest then sure, if you can't then no. We got a deal?" I asked, tilting his head up to look at me and not my chest. "Deal." he said holding his hand out. I shook his hand and then walked past him, towards Dr. Webber's office.
I knocked on the door and Derek opened it, stepping aside to let me in. "Morning, Dr. Webber." I said smiling. "Good morning, Dr. Sloan. Have a seat." he said pointing to a chair. I sat down and Uncle Derek sat beside me. "Richard, this is my god-daughter, Darcy. Her father is a plastic surgeon." Derek said introducing me. "It's nice to properly meet you Darcy. I'm Richard Webber, the chief said shaking my hand. "Nice to meet you." I said smiling. "I think Darcy has potential. She's a Track-and-Field running champion but she could also become a great surgeon. I would like to put Darcy on post-op patients today as that's what she enjoys doing. I would like you, Preston, Miranda and myself to meet with her at some point over the next few days to talk about possibilities for her, if you are alright with it?" Derek said, confusing me as to what he's talking about. "Definitely. I will talk to Miranda and Preston as soon as I can." Dr. Webber said. Derek nodded and smiled at him before standing up. I followed Derek into the hall and over to a desk, where he grabbed a few charts. "Wanna go for a run at the track tonight?" I asked, looking at Derek. "Sure. 5?" he asked. "Sure." I said smiling before grabbing the charts and heading to where the patients were.
