The night was dark and cold,  and the wind whistled noisily through the trees. It was late, she should've gone home hours ago, but Jamie was missing, and she had to find him. She was in the forest down by Woodcrest avenue, that's where they'd found the previous kid who went missing. She had wandered deep in the forest, deeper than she had ever dared to go, but she had to find Jamie...she had to. It was her fault he ran away, she shouldn't have said anything, it was all her fault.

"Jamie" she called, "Jamie, I'm sorry, please answer!" Her voice was low, in fear of awakening any dangerous creatures in the forest. She wandered around aimlessly until she had lost her sense of direction, pushing around stray branches and jumping at each moving shadow. She didn't know what the time was anymore, and her voice was hoarse from all the shouting. She wandered around some more, still calling out his name, and just as she was about to burst with frustration, she heard a voice far in the distance.

"Lia!!!" She heard the voice call. Adaliah looked up...... only one person called her 'Lia'. She looked around wildly, turning toward where she thought the voice was.

"Jamie", her voice rose, "Jamie!" This time the reply came sooner.

"Lia, Lia!", she took off at a run, scrambling toward the direction of the voice,

"Jamie! I'm sorry," she shouted. "I shouldn't have, I..." She was filled with adrenalin...... Nothing could stop her, but then she heard his voice again.

"Lia, don't come here, get as far away from me as you can!" She froze in her tracks. That was definitely Jamie, but.... something was wrong, no, she had to get to him, he was her best friend, nothing could go wrong, not now. She started running again, sprinting as fast as she could, jumping over branches, darting around trees, ignoring Jamie's warnings.

Every step she took, his voice became louder, closer, finally, she burst into a clearing, the trees now grew high, forming a canopy and allowing only a few rays of light to pass through its wooden barrier.  She spotted Jamie on the other end of the clearing, saw the flurry of emotions cross his face when he saw her, relief, panic then horror.  She ran to him,

"Jamie!!!" She whispered but was only answered by the alarmed look on his face. Suddenly he seemed to snap back to his senses,

"What are you doing coming here?" he said in a loud whisper," Did you not hear me screaming or am I just that quiet" His voice was now tinged with frustration.

"I....I...Uh...well, first,  what are YOU doing here?" She replied, mimicking his quiet tone., "And why are we whispering?" She then realised that his hands and feet were chained to the stump of a tree. He froze and said,

"Get behind that tree, quick", She didn't know why, but she obeyed. Jamie usually had a reason to all the things he said. That was probably why he hadn't told her about his parents, or that he lived with the old witch-like lady on Pondcreek Street. She didn't really know him after all......

Suddenly, the bushes toward one side of the clearing parted, and men in red cloaks with odd symbols scrawled on them emerged from the gap. They approached Jamie, their faces expressionless, and spoke in deep synchronised voices;

"The heir to the dark witch queen shall rise,

causing the entire earth's demise,

only death can save the world from harm,

and the passing of the queen's only charm  "

Then they started to dissipate, shadows forming around their colourless forms. Jamie turned to look around at her, his voice was urgent as he said,

"Lia, listen to me, we don't have a lot of time, I need you to focus on these instructions, "

But she was so confused she could hardly focus, Heir to the dark queen? World's demise? what in God's was going on? "I....Um, I..." She stammered. "What's happening Jamie" She ended up whispering, smooth Adaliah, she thought, real smooth....

Jamie was not jittered, as if he knew exactly what the dark shadow people had said, "Listen, long story short," He whispered to her, "the old witch lady who I live with is actually a witch, the queen, and I am supposedly the heir to her throne, I am a danger to this world and everyone in it, and I have to die in order for everyone to live, that's what the prophecy means....it wasn't your fault for getting mad at me, I should have told you about my parents, but they died and there was nothing I can do about it, they died trying to save me, and they succeeded, I should know, They told me.... "

"Wait, " She interrupted, "I thought you said they died when you were born, how exactly did you speak to them?"

"Heir to the throne, remember, I 'm a wizard, I can talk to the dead,"

"Right..." Suddenly the bushes parted, and Adaliah ducked behind the trunk of the tree,

The shadow-like creatures were back, and they had brought a weapon with them, a deadly dagger with jagged edges and a sharp blade that glowed like it had been set on fire. The same oddly shaped symbols were etched on the dagger, floating around as if in liquid, the symbols were a dark, glittery purple colour. The shadow creatures were completely focused on Jamie, they walked to him slowly, and once again spoke in harmony,

"Heir to the dark one," They began, "the time has come for you to pass into the world below," one of the creatures stepped forward...

"May your destiny remain discontented," it started, "and may your fate remain yours..."

With that, it raised the knife and plunged it downward aiming straight at Jamie's heart.
