My books fell to the ground, a thud echoing throughout the hallway. Whoever had knocked into me leaned down to help me pick up my books. After apologizing, he ran off after some other guy running down the hallway. This school is full of animals. Oh my god. I continued down the hallway, scanning the plaques by the doors for number 2-126. After making a complete circle around the first floor, I leaned my head against the wall and slightly banged my forehead against it. A hand on my shoulder made me jump back, ready for attack. Luckily, it was just a girl with long, wavy black hair.
"Sorry," she apologized, "I, uh, just was wondering if you were, um, okay. Are you?"
I let out a small laugh. "I'm fine. Just frustrated." I sighed and tied my long hair up into a ponytail. "It's my first day and I can't find my class for the life of me."
She beamed. "Really? I'm new here too. I'm Kira." She stuck out her hand, and I shook it, telling her my name. "What class are you looking for?"
"Um," I said, digging through my piles of paperwork. "Ha!" I exclaimed, pulling the paper out of the manila folder in my bag. "History. With Mr.... Yukimura?" I questioned, sure I pronounced it wrong.
She gave me a nervous smile. "Yeah. That's... my father. His class is down the hall and to the right, next to those group of guys," she instructed, pointing to a group of boys talking about some lacrosse game. Who plays lacrosse? "Here, let me see your schedule." I handed the yellow sheet of paper to her, glancing at the clock above the lockers. Two minutes until class. Kira squealed in excitement, and I turned back to her. I rose my eyebrow. "We have almost every class together. Your-our- math class next period is kind of hard to find. I'll come and get you from class."
I smiled. "Cool. Thank you so much. Bye, Kira!"
"Bye, Audrey!"
I smiled and made my way to class. As soon as I walked in, the bell rang. I hurried to an available seat up front and dropped my bag to the ground. Kira's dad--I mean, my history teacher--started the class the way every teacher does: he says hello to the class, tells the class what we're learning and, worst of all, introduced the new girl. I even had to stand up and awkwardly wave to everyone behind me. I cringed at myself and sat back down. This is going to be a long day.
Unfortunately, I didn't see Kira until two periods later. She looked like she was arguing with Mr. Yukimura, her dad, so I didn't question her absence. I walked over to her, nodding a greeting to her dad. "Hello, Mr. Yukimura." I turned to Kira. "Didn't you say that you have this period with me?" Kira nodded, and hooked her arm through mine. Kira waved goodbye to her dad and we headed down the hallway.
"So," she said as we walked down the hallway, "you know that guy Scott?"
I nodded. "Yeah. He's in my... economics class, I think? With that weird teacher, Coach Finstock." We both laughed. "Why? You interested in him?"
She blushed. "I'm not interested in dating. I was just wondering if you knew him."
"Mhm," I said, laughing. I could already tell we were going to be best friends.
The next day when the lunch bell rang, I internally sighed in relief. For me, stress equals hunger. And no food equals irratability. And trust me, no one wants to be around me then. Kira and I left the classroom, backpacks draped over our shoulders, and laughing at the boys racing to get food. Kira told me she usually just sits with her dad, so I suggested she get away from her parents and socialize. You should probably know that I'm very confident in myself. I like socializing, and I believe that I should use my powers--like my gorgeous appearance--for good. So, I have the appearance of a mean girl, but the heart of an angel. And the mind of a genius. All of what I just said is sarcastic. Except for the genius part.
