I sat down in the chair, not quite sure where I was. Everyting was sluggish and fuzzy, my eyes didn't focus on anything. I kind of just stared blankly ahead, grasping Leila's hand for support. Or, I guess, it started off as a need for support, then turned into an act I couldn't undo. I felt so numb. Images of Christian being wheeled away flashed once more, but I had already cried all my tears. Now I was in a state of shock. The images switched from Christian's dead body to my father's throat I had sliced. I'm pretty sure I'm going to need therapy after tonight. I faintly remember getting here, being shoved into a police cruiser as I watched men wheel my brother away. I had cried then, clinging to Derek, not wanting to let him go in fear of him dying too. But I had to let him go, because he had to help find Stiles.
Stiles.
"Oh god," I whispered, terrified. I dropped Leila's hand, but she didn't seem to notice. I ran up to the desk in the front, just steps away from where I was standing, when Scott's mom walked in. I ran up to her, clinging to her arm. "Have they found Stiles yet?"
She looked at me with wide eyes. "Audrey, what happened to you?"
"That doesn't matter right now," I told her urgently. I must have looked crazy. But she knew me well enough-- I've been over at Scott's multiple times with Stiles, and had gotten to know Melissa and loved her-- to know this wasn't normal. "Please, just tell me--" I took a deep breath "--oh god, tell me he's okay."
She had a determined look on her face. "He'll be fine. I came here to see if I could help." She looked up, asking the officer behind the desk, "I was hoping to see Agent McCall?"
"What are you doing here?" Agenct McCall asked, coming into view. He looked down at me, clinging to Melissa. "Miss Garrett, we still have to question you."
"Please," I begged him, "I have to find Stiles. I can't lose him, too."
He looked up from my face to Melissa's. "Okay, let's go."
The car ride was awkward, especially when Melissa and Agent McCall started talking about how he came up with his theory. Melissa was quick to dismiss the theory, giving excuses to him such as "you were drunk off your ass." I kept to looking out the window, only looking away when I got a text. It was either Kira, Leila or Derek. Derek had gone looking for Stiles, and had asked me to come meet him. I had told him that I was out with Scott's parents, trying to help find Stiles. Kira messaged me five minutes later saying that she saw police cars surrounding my house, and no one would tell her what hapened. I didn't want to talk about it yet, so I told her I was fine and would explain later. And Leila... she'd been texting me ever since I told her I was going to find Stiles. Most of her texts were either, "How is the search going?" and "Your mother keeps asking when you'll be back." Both of those were answered by "I don't know."
The scenary outside turned from the road to the woods. Agent McCall put the car in park, the red and blue lights turning off. I squinted into the darkness, hoping to find any sign of Stiles. I was a little disappointed when no sparks appeared. I guess it was only a Kira thing. Melissa came up beside me, handing me a flashlight. I put it on, shining the light towards the ground while Melissa shone it in front of us. I pulled my jacket tighter around me as the cold air seeped in.
Agent McCall walked ahead of us, thinking he had more of a chance to find clues. "Are you going to tell me what happened?" Melissa asked.
I looked ahead, knowing if I faced her I would break down. I focused on the sound of leaves crunching beneath us as I contemplated on whether or not to tell her. I sighed. "Did Scott or Stiles ever tell you about me?"
"I've heard Scott tease Stiles for how in love with you he is," she joked.
"No, I mean about me. What I am."
She turned to me in shock. "You're not human," she whispered.
I laughed. "No. I... well, I'm not totally sure what I am. Anyways, I moved here to get away from my dad. He was abusive. Um," I stuttered, shaking my head of the thought, "I-I didn't know why. I mean, I only figured it out tonight--"
"You don't have to tell me if you don't want to."
I smiled at her thoughtfulness. "No, it's fine. I should probably talk to someone about it anyways. It's not like I can actually go to therapy or anything. Just... promise me you won't tell anyone."
She scoffed. "Anyone who I could actually talk to about it would already know about it."
"Right. Well, um, he was a protector. Like me. Protectors have this connection with the one they are supposed to protect, someone who is supernatural and precious to the future. I knew that much from Derek. And tonight, I found out that when you lose that connection... you go insane. You lose it. And that's what happened to my father. And I killed him." My voice broke and tears were starting to spill. Melissa put an arm around my shoulder. "I didn't want to, I swear, Mrs. McCall. He," I sucked in a deep breath, "killed my brother. And he was going to kill Derek and Leila and I couldn't let him do that. I couldn't. Derek had impaled him, but then he started healing.
"He stood back up and lunged for Derek. H-he had a dagger in his hand, and was going to kill him. So I grabbed the dagger from my sheath, snuck up behind him... and pulled. I kept the dagger against his throat so he wouldn't heal. It was all the rage and panic... and fear. Derek had gotten me to stop, but it was already too late. His body... he collapsed... his eyes, oh god, his eyes..." I began to sob.
"Shh, Audrey. You did what you had to do."
"I keep telling myself that. But, I killed someone. I killed my father."
"He would've killed you," she assured me. "He would've killed you. He would've killed Derek and everyone else involved--"
She was cut off my screaming in the distance. I broke out of her hold and followed the sound. She raced after me, and so did Agent McCall. I could see Stiles thrashing around in the distance, against a tree. Once I was a foot away from, I slid onto my kness, cradling his head in my arms. Dirt covered his shirt from rolling around in the dirt, and his hair was dishelved and covered in leaves from the gorund. His face was pale as he kept screaming "NO! WAIT! WAIT!" I looked up at Melissa in panic. She got down on her knees as well, telling me to restrain him. I wrapped my arms around his chest, pulling him onto my lap. He stopped thrashing after the fourth time I screamed his name. He opened his eyes tentatively, taking in his surroundings. He looked scared as he looked into my eyes, so I tried my best to calm him down. He squeezed my hand, which was on his chest.
The drive to the hospital was mainly me comforting him. He had no clue about what happened while he was out, and I wanted to keep it that way. Stiles layed his head on my chest, and I ran my fingers through his hair. He wasn't asleep, just staring blankly ahead. He didn't talk or move, he just sat there with his head on my chest. I appreciated the silence. Of course, that was short lived. When we got to the hospital, everyone was crowded around the car, trying to get to Stiles. His dad was in front, thanking god for his son being found. Stiles stumbled out of the car, needing Scott's and his dad's support. I got out of the car, closing the door behind me. Melissa and I hurried after them.
After we got Stiles situated in a room, Scott and his parents, Lydia and I all waited out in the hall. I sat down awkwardly, trying to avoid Agent McCall's stares. I had brought my knees up to my chest, resting my chin in between my knees. Scott came over to me, taking a seat next to me.
"Kira told me something happened."
I didn't even blink, just stared ahead. "Yeah. Something did happen."
"You don't want to talk about it?"
I turned to him fully. "Not right now."
Stiles's dad came down the hall. "He's sleeping now. And he's just fine." Scott let out a breath of relief. "He doesn't remember much. It's a bit of a dream to him. Thank you." That was directed towards Agent McCall.
My phone rang, and I excused myself. It was Kira. "Audrey, I just heard. I am so sorry. Why didn't you come talk to me?"
"I'm going to. I'll head over to your house now." A hand was placed on my shoulder, and I looked up. Agent McCall. "I'll be there in an hour. I have to answer some questions first."
