Me and Sonny just stood there for a while, shocked. She looked over to me raising her eyebrows, as if to ask ‘What do we do now?’ I stood there staring back at her. Thinking through what we could possibly do to get back in the house without Mom noticing. I hope to God she didn’t go checking up on me to find an empty bedroom. I couldn’t come up with anything. I am dead! Gone. Sonny can kiss ever seeing me ever again. Mom is probably going to murder me or punish me in every aspect of my life. OK, maybe I’m exaggerating but I’m somewhere near dead. Oh God, please, please help me.
“Do you have any hairpins?” Sonny asks
“What?” I ask. We’re stuck outside. No way in to my house, and she’s thinking about hairpins?
“Do you have some? Just trust me” She replies, and I take two hairpins out of my hair and hand it to her. We both jump over the gate carefully and she makes her way to the back yard of my house and around to the back door. She starts bending the hairpins awkwardly.
“What are you doing?” I question her.
“Picking the lock” She states so naturally, as if this was the most normal thing to do.
After a long wait of Sonny twisting and turning the pins into the lock we hear a click.
“Yes!” She whispers with a grin on her face.
Both of us make our way into the kitchen and close the door, trying to minimise the creak of death coming from that door. We manage to close it eventually and turn the lights on. It was pitch-dark and we couldn’t see anything. That’s when we hear the footsteps making their way to the kitchen. Great! Sonny just made us walk to death. I look over at Sonny and she’s taking off her coat frantically, so I do the same. She grabs my coat and shoves it inside one of the cupboards with her own and shots it fast. Smart. The kitchen door opens revealing mom with a very quizzical look.
“Hi Natalie” Sonny smiles at her.
“What are you both doing downstairs at this hour” Mom questions crossing her arms.
“Oh, we got thirsty and I didn’t want to come downstairs alone. So I got Ken to come with me” Sonny lies. Sometimes I forget how good she can be at lying and ironically enough I trust her.
“I didn’t hear you come downstairs”
“We tried to be careful not to wake you and Miles up, but then you were downstairs anyways” Sonny continues making a risky guess.
“Quick back to bed girls, you’ve got school tomorrow” Mom dismisses, walking out the kitchen door.
I walk over to Sonny and give her the tightest hug I could manage. How much I love her right now, she just saved both of us with her lien skills.
“Oh Sonny!” I hug her tighter.
“You’re… Killing….Me!” She groans.
“Sorry” I say letting her go. We made our way back to my bedroom. My heart is still racing and I need to calm down.

Me and Sonny walk into class together. We don’t have Maths with Eila or Troy, which probably eased the awkward tension, but only a little. Sonny sat beside me and Luca sat at the far side opposite me, Lina sat behind him. Luca continuously gave me and Sonny weird, almost reprimanding looks.
“Why is he looking at us like that” Sonny speaks my thoughts.
“I have no idea” I reply not looking at any of them but straight ahead. Mr Kane saunters into class and the class goes quiet. I actually like Maths. That makes me more abnormal to the majority of my class but I loved the feeling of achievement when I got a challenging sum or equation right.
