Emile glanced at the door to be sure that the two weren’t coming back. He ducked under the counter and pulled something out of the shelf. A silvery, full-faced mask. He ran his fingers over it.

He put the mask on and pulled his hooded cloak over his head. Moving swiftly and quietly, he headed opposite the direction Albert and Vivienne had gone.

He caught sight of a man and followed him. He moved over to the wall and climbed up the gutter like a spider and hoisted himself onto the roof. He leaped from building to building, keeping a close eye on the man.

Emile pulled something out of his cloak—a whip. He flashed the whip out, cracking it towards the man. The man yelped as he was yanked upwards. With a great pull, Emile brought the man onto the roof. No one had noticed. Emile was good at what he did.

“What in God’s na—?” The man turned towards Emile and blanched. “You.”

“I warned you,” Emile said in a dark voice. “I told you to stay away from the girl. I said I would kill you.”

“It was an accident!” The man cried piteously. “I didn’t know she worked at the general store!”

He was right; it was all coincidental. But Emile had warned this man, and he had shown his face anyway.

“I’ve shown mercy to you three times,” Emile growled. “I will not show mercy again.”

He moved towards the man as quick as a dart and drew a blade. One quick slash—and the man’s life were over. Emile picked up his body and tossed it off the roof of the building. He heard screams and cries of horror. He turned away, not letting anyone see him, and leaped back towards the general store.

No one would ever know that he had done it.

We heard a scream in front of us. Albert and I shared a look and ran towards the cry. There was a small crowd in front of us. We pushed to the front.

Before me lay the body of the man in the lion mask. His throat was slit, and his bones were broken in several places. A look of sheer horror and fear was molded onto his face. His eyes were glazed and distant, but he seemed to be staring right at me.

I fell backwards, everything going black.
