WHAT IS THE POC AWARDS?
The People of Colour Awards is a contest made especially for the people of colour in literature. This is to celebrate and appreciate POC characters here on wattpad. Think of it as the Wattys for POC based books.
This is a literary contest founded and run by secretjellyfish. Entries of the People of Colour Awards will be solely judge based, meaning that entries will be read and judged to determine the winners. There will however, be a voting segment for some categories ( details will be provided later on)
Does my book quality for this?
You're probably wondering if your book qualifies for the POC Awards. If the following applies to your book then it sure does:
¤The main character of your story is a person of colour
What is a person of colour?
• a person of colour
a person who is not white parentage or has not reaped the traditional advantages of being white (i.e job opportunities, social treatment etc).
Rules:
⭐ the main character of your book should be a person of colour
⭐ your story must be written in English.
⭐ must be your own story
⭐ complete the form on the next chapter titled "Form" in a single comment and add the necessary tags to enter
⭐ doesn't have to be completed but must have more than 3 chapters( excluding prologue & author notes)
⭐ all ratings are accepted
⭐two entries per person, but different genres
⭐ your story must fulfil all the requirements to be accepted.
⭐you must apply before the deadline: April 2017 [might be changed]
⭐you will be disqualified if you change your story title without letting us know
⭐results will be posted August 2017.
Are all genres included in the awards?
The following are the genres included in the POC Awards;
• Romance/ Chicklit
• Action
• Mystery/Thriller
• Adventure
• Short Story
• Vampire
• Werewolf
• Teen Fiction
• Fanfiction
• General & Historical Fiction
• Poetry
• Fantasy / Sci-Fi
• Spiritual
• Humour
• Horror
That being said, I have come up with several reading lists to put your stories in. The reading lists are as follows;
💕사랑해saranghae - for stories that make you fall inlove all over again and ask "whose cutting onions next to me?"
💐Corto y dulce - for stories that are short and sweet(or not).
🗡名誉meiyo - for stories that get your adrenaline going as you read, dragging you straight into the scene ready to fight someone too.
🔎 Zugzwang - for stories with a touch a mystery. Always leaving you guessing and scrolling down the page for more.
🍞Cornbread- for the good oldies. stories that are familiar and leave us nostalgic.
If you are not sure if you'll join the contest you can still make it onto the reading lists. Simply add the tags #POC + genre and hashtag the reading list you think best suits your book. (ie #POCShortStory #Cortoydulce)
Are all ratings allowed for this?
Yes, all ratings will be accepted for the POC Awards 2017. Mature, R-rated and LGBQT inclusive.
How do I enter?
It's quite simple! To enter the POC Awards 2017;
1) You have to put the tags #ThePOCAwards2017 or #tpoca2017 to your story.
You should also add the tag #POC+genre of your story, for example
#POCRomace
#POCAction
Both tags [#tpoca2017/ #thepocawards2017 and #poc+genre] of these tags must be present.
note: the tags must be part of your first 20 tags so I can see them.
2) You must fill out the application form correctly in the next chapter.
3) You must follow this page and add this book to your reading list to keep up with any updates.
4) You must tag atleast 3 other people who might be interested in joining this competition to get the word out.
How do these awards work?
Stage 1: The judges will go through all the entries and come up with a shortlist consisting of 5 stories per genre.
Stage 2: We will announce the 3 or 5 finalists(depending on how many entries) of each genre and open up voting for the following categories:
Best male poc character
Best female poc character
Most diverse poc story plotline
Stage 3: The judges will decide which story they liked best of the finalist stories and the Winner and Runner Up will be announced.
Stage 4: Winners get their prizes!
What kind of prizes are we giving?

- A permanent follow from all the judges.
- A shout out from all the judges.
- A critique on 5 chapters of your book of entry from one of the judges.
- A badge for proof of your winning.
