"2pm Bodyguard Wooyoung 'Light and Paper Thin"
You loved your job, lived and breathed it. But unfortunately it had a tendency to attract those with a tenuous grasp on reality. After a few incidents that left you shaken, you hired a guard. And that's how Wooyoung came into your life.
He was perfectly nice, if a little shy. Not the type you'd normally associate with his line of work. To be honest his slight frame made you question his abilities. However your worries were squelched the first time he was put to task.
Even amidst a throng of people he was somehow able to maintain a sphere of personal space for you. And when your attention was elsewhere an arm reached out to touch your hair. Suddenly Wooyoung's hand snaked out and grasped it before it could touch you. With a deft twist the offender yelped and withdrew.
Sharp-eyed and swift he was always at the ready for your defense. But as the months passed you started to notice something. His spirit became threadbare and frayed around the edges. Perceptiveness turned into paranoia, once graceful movements became rushed. Most noticeably though was his demeanor. When he first came to you his smile was quick. Now you saw it less and less. Wooyoung appeared weighed down, burdened and you were starting to suspect why. And knowing his loyalty he wouldn't leave your side until he was killed or you confronted him. Only one of those options was tolerable.
It was another late night. You were tired but Wooyoung seemed even more so. There had been a few incidents this week, minor at best, but he'd been taut as a bowstring ever since. He was sitting at a table familiarizing himself with back alleys for your next location tomorrow.
"It's not as bad as all that is it?" you asked softly.
After making a noncommittal noise he replied, "Small problems can become big ones if they aren't taken care of properly."
You recognized your chance. "I'm going to lose you, aren't I?"
Concentration broken, Wooyoung raised his head. "What? I'm not going anywhere."
"Your job is wearing you out. Whether you quit or get hurt, it'll happen either way. You're not stupid, you have to be aware of what's happening. So why are you staying?"
Widening his eyes he shook his head in denial. "No, I-"
"Is it because you care for me?" There. You'd said it. Though at the last moment you chickened out and changed the question to one that could be interpreted many different ways. 'Coward,' whispered your heart.
He dropped his face to hide his blush. "O-of course I do," he stammered. "I'm your guard. I'm supposed to."
"No, you're supposed to protect me. There's a difference." Hesitating, you shored up your courage. If you didn't say it now you'd regret this moment if you let it pass. "Because I care for you. A lot, actually. You're sweet and thoughtful and kind." You bit your lip to stop yourself from rambling out more adjectives. He had the point, you were certain.
"I don't know about that." Rubbing the back of his neck in embarrassment he looked askance at you. "Really?"
"And funny."
He laughed. It seemed more like an effort at relieving nervousness. "Ok, ok. I...I love you. It's screwing with my head, clouding my judgement. I wasn't expecting it but it happened and now I can't stop worrying that I'll forget something and you'll be hurt. Over and over I have nightmares that I'm just too damn slow."
Wooyoung rubbed his face and when he dropped his hands he looked years older.
"I can't watch you worry yourself to death. Literally. I'm going to replace you."
"Oh." He looked so crestfallen it broke your heart. "I guess if you feel that way you have to."
"It's ok, I'm not kicking you out. You'll be in charge of interviewing and vetting the candidates for your replacement. And then you can stay on in another capacity if you choose."
"You-you're not getting rid of me completely?"
Shaking your head you replied, "Silly man, do I have to repeat how much I like you? It was hard enough the first time."
Apparently seeing the last of your fortitude drain away he stepped closer. Lightly he traced a finger along the edge of your jaw. How such a light touch could make every nerve tingle was beyond your understanding. After reaching your chin he tilted your face up to his own and planted a kiss to your waiting lips.
"Nope. Didn't hear it. May have to repeat yourself a few hundred times." Another kiss. "Maybe a thousand."
Seeing the light returning to his eyes was reward enough, but if you got to be with him as well? Then your confession was truly worth every ounce of bravery it took.
