I held the cigarette up to my mouth and inhaled. Long and deep. I was sat cross legged on the small, terribly uncomfortable bed in my cell. The small toilet, sink, and bed took up a majority of the cell. "Hey. Hey, Jimmy." The 27- year- old guard looked at me with a sloppy, tired grin on his face. He lifted his head, revealing his chiseled jaw line, and the wavy dark blond hair that sat on his forehead. "What do you want, Al." I smirked.

"I need another cigarette."

"You know I'm not even supposed to be giv-"

"Guess what today is?" I smiled broadly as Jimmy handed me another already lit cigarette, "January 19th, 1943. That means I've been here exactly a year." I threw the old cigarette butt on the ground and stepped on it. I could feel the ash crunching beneath my shoe.

"We also have another prisoner coming today. He'll be in the cell right next to you."

"No way," I jumped up and grasped the bars, the only thing separating me from Jimmy. The bars rattled in sync with the thunder outside. "Another inmate," I breathed, smiling maliciously. "Is little Al excited that she'll finally have a friend?" Jimmy asked me in a babying voice, "at least you won't talk to me anymore." I replied with a wink, "Oh, I know you secretly love it." He threw his head back and let out a hearty laugh. He looked back at me still grinning, "You know what, I actually do." I smirked at his comment, brought the cigarette to my mouth, and drew in another long breath. "So what's he in for?" I asked, referring to my new inmate. "Wouldn't tell us," he replied, "he's getting transferred from a prison in England. Apparently they need the space, for the war and all that." I nodded. "Makes sense." I let out a deep breath, the smoke billowing around me in sheets. "I'm sure he'll love Alcatraz," my voice dripping with heavy sarcasm, "I mean, who doesn't?"

I woke up to the footsteps of at least a dozen people. I don't even remember falling asleep to be honest. But the footsteps got closer and closer to my cell, and a part of me was hoping they were coming for me, to tell me that I'm free to go. But no matter how hard I wish for that to happen, I know it never will. The footsteps halted right next to my cell. The dozen security guards parted, a rippling effect, as though you were dropping a pebble in a pond. Then he stepped out. I didn't even have to ask, I knew he was the new inmate. I watched him run a hand through his hair, and I could tell he hadn't seen me yet. His jawline was chiseled to near perfection, and his hair was greasy but was still folded in perfect cylindrical ringlets. The largest security guard out of all of them, only a few inches taller than him, grabbed him by the bicep and threw him in the cell. The door grinded against the iron above, making a hard, shrill, quite disturbing sound as it was shut. The security guards filled out in a mismatched order, unlike when they brought in the new inmate, and I watched them go to the very end of the hall until every single one of them was gone. There was seventeen cells in my row. And I was always the only resident, until five minutes ago that is.

I took out a cigarette and lit it, before taking my time to turn around to look at the new inmate. He was already staring at me, giving me a look that would have turned anyone out of Alcatrz to ice. But I've been here a year, and I've seen much worse. I brought my cigarette to my lip and slowly dragged in a long, smooth breath. I let it slowly, letting smoke fog my vision, but still not letting go of my stare. After what seemed like an eternity of staring each other down, he strolled across his cell and sat on his bed. Thick Iron bars were the only thing between him and my cell. I could reach out and touch him if I wanted to. He spoke.

"So whats a young, pretty girl like you doing here, in one of the worlds most famous prisons, none other than 'Alcatraz'." He had a thick, deep british voice that echoed throughout the empty corridor. Not one guard in sight. I sucked in another breath, savoring the way the smoke filled my lungs. I huffed it out. "I should be asking you the same thing. You look a bit young to be here as well, and from the look of it you don't look like a complete and total psychopath, which means that whatever you're in her for, you did in your complete and utter sanity." His mouth folded itself into a thin line. I continued, "You must only, what? 27? 28?"

"25, actually." He rasped.

"Why are you so calm? Usually when people first come, they're screaming and crying and yelling that they're inncocent. Why not you?" He stayed silent for a while before answering with a question, "What about you? Why are you so sane and happy with where you're at? You do know the world is not all smiles and rainbows, don't you?"

"You think I'm happy with where I'm at?" I stood up on my bed, grasping the bars that separated us, "Don't you just come into Alcatraz being the son of a bitch that you are, and believe that you have everything and everyone figured out, because I can sincierly tell you now that you don't," I bent my knees to get a better look at him, "because no matter what your here for, you're insane. You're sick. You're disgusting."

He raised his voice and got off the bed, striding over to the other side of the cell, "And what about the innocent people here, the people that didn't do anything?" I felt something snap inside me as a slow, disgusting, malicious smile drags across my features, stretching wider than any smilt should ever be able to go.

"There is a reason they were chosen as suspects. They probably did something too, becuase no mater how much we try to deny it,

we all have a little bit of insanity inside of us."

My hands were still wrapped around the rough iron bars, when he crossed the room in one stride, his large, rough hands folding over mine. I could feel his hot breath on my face,

"Oh baby," he spoke, his voice barely more than a whisper,

"You have no idea."
