Starflight closed his eyes, his dark, horned head rested on a cushion. He heard a soft growl that escaped Fatespeaker's snout, and to his left Sunny's leg twitched.
I love them both like a mother.
However there were two of them. And only one of Starflight. He opened his eyes and sighed a silent huff. Fatespeaker's snoring stopped and Starflight watched her turn toward him and lay back down again. Starflight closed his eyes, just barely, to watch Fatespeaker's soft and graceful moves as she rested her head on her own pillow, only to slip into a gentle sleep again.
Starflight turned around quietly on the ground. Seeing Sunny, she was usually positive and enegetic. Was that all that Starflight liked of her? He remembered his breakout when he confessed his love to her. He remembered... that she never said "I love you too." back to him. The only thing that she had said to him was "I love you like a brother." That confused Starflight. Did Sunny mean that she loved him like a sibling, not a "you're so amazing and cute will you be my partner?"
What do I like about Fatespeaker?
Starflight didn't really know. Sure, she was beautiful and all. But he couldn't put it into words. Is that what the feeling love is supposed to feel like? Memories of Sunny passed in his head as he recalled his secret confessions to himself, he remembered he and Tsunami and Clay not telling Sunny about their escape away from Kestrel, Webs, and Dune. He'd felt bad about that. Remembering Sunny picking Thorn as SandWing queen made him smile. But he felt that she was just not the right dragon. She was a SandWing, a difigured one. But her disfiguration made Starflight feel sorry for her, he felt pity.
She's a SandWing, Starflight, Starflight told himself. Our dragonets would be hybrids.
He turned back to look at Fatespeaker. To his surprise, she was staring right at him, a gentle smile spread across her narrow face.
"I know what you're thinking, Star," she said in barely a whisper, just enough for Starflight to hear.
Starflight grinned, just slightly, scooting closer to her. He reached out his talons, meeting hers. Fatespeaker squeezed his talons.
"Fatespeaker," Starflight whispered.
"Continue, Star," Fatespeaker soothed.
"Fatespeaker, I... I choose you."
