Chapter Thirteen: Anger Management Problems
The school bell pierces through my ears and I shake my head. Why does it have to be so annoyingly loud? I walk slowly out of the building and into the parking lot.
The last time I talked to Lina was when she got out of my car with a slight wave goodbye and a smile on her face. But it has been bothering me since Saturday morning because I know for a fact that her smile had been forced, for some reason. And I haven't seen her all day to ask because she didn't come to school today.
"Jonah!" I hear someone call from behind me. I whip my head around to find Levi strolling behind. His face flashes a smile and I raise an eyebrow. He's been fine in History this morning, going on and on about Sophia Port.
Apparently, he'd actually managed to make a good impression.
I'd sat and listened to his rambling, grateful when the bell sounded the end of the class. He'd been missing from lunch again, and I hadn't seen him around the halls. But here he is now, ready to act as if we're best friends once more.
"Did you believe how hard that handout was this morning? Mrs. Greyson's definitely trying to kill us or something." We're near my car now. Mom let me drop her off to work this morning so I could get to school on time, because, you know, late. As usual. Levi leans against the hood, crossing his arms over his chest and eyes wandering about the parking lot.
I stand still, only staring at him. Finally, after a few moments of silence, he turns to find me looking dumbfounded. "What?" he asks, raising his palms to the air.
"You're asking me how I felt about the handout in History this morning?"
Levi taps his temple once. Twice.
He points a finger into the air. "If I recall. Yes."
I shake my head, grabbing the keys out of the front pocket of my bag, "We're not friends, you know."
He flips a hand, "You're right. I'd classify it as more of lovers, but we can go with that, yeah."
My brows scrunch together as my mouth hangs open. "You have issues." He snickers before pushing himself off of the car.
"Don't worry, Jonah Montgomery. I have eyes on someone who is much prettier than you!" he calls over his shoulder as he walks away, leaving me with more questions than I'd like to have.
Weird kid.
I get in my car, trying to brush off the slight entertainment of Levi's personality. I know what I'm doing before I even pull out of the parking lot, and instead of going down the road to my house, I turn the other way, down the road I'd taken Saturday morning.
Pulling up to Lina's house, I spot a single car in the driveway, one that's not hers, and stop. I stay put for a few seconds and let out a nervous breath of air. I ask myself if what I'm about to do is right. But before I can talk myself out of it, I'm already getting out of the car and walking to the front door. I pound on it loudly, letting anyone inside know I'm here.
But no one answers. I knock again, louder this time, but still nothing. "Lina?" I call out, but I'm answered with silence.
Heaving a heavy sigh, I turn around with my fists clenched slightly and start back to my car, but the second I step onto the front lawn, I hear the door creak open. Looking back, I see a very tall man standing in the doorway.
He has brown, graying hair, and a mouth that seems permanently turned down into a frown. His eyes are weary and hard, staring straight at me. He's about my height, but he looks to be a bit bigger than me, surprisingly.
