The difference between loving someone and being in love with someone: when you love someone you're in it for the long term. You'd do anything for them. You hate to see them sad and seeing them laugh brightens your day. You'd do anything to cheer them up and they would do the same.
When you're in love with someone it's temporary. You can't stay in love with someone forever because, like everything, it ends. When you're in love with them their eyes sparkle when they laugh and you get butterflies when you see them. You're in love with someone when every time your phone buzzes you're disappointed when it's not their name on your screen and elated when it is. When you're in love with someone you're life revolves around them.
However, much rather you love someone than be in love with them- you can always love someone, you can only stay in love with someone until someone better comes along.
