Smoke...

Smoke and flames was all he could see from behind as he limped to the side of the empty road. Once he got to the side, his feet slipped from the steep hill. He looked back at the car he once sat in.

It was in flames. Vibrant colours of orange and white coming out from the tilted car.

"Mother!" He cried as he noticed blood staining the road. Tears streamed down his face as he processed everything that he had just witnessed in the past 10 minutes.

It was 9:05 at night, moonlight streaking onto the glass panes of the car.

"So Alex. How was your friend? You havent seen him in a while. How was hi-"

"Fine."

Alex's mom glanced at him then back at the road. The road they were on was surrounded by forests and the road seemed to endless.

"Are you okay honey? You were so happy when I dropped you off this morning." His mom responded.

"I'm fine mother." Alex replied, folding his arms and looking out the window. The trees recieved their colour when the headlights beamed onto them then dissapeared once they reached the side of the car. Alex let out a long, quiet huff and closed his eyes.

Little did Alex's mom know, his friend completely changed. He was so kind-hearted and loyal. Now he was rude, anti-social, and smoking. He thought about his friend sitting on his bed, glued to his phone. Once Alex would attempt to speak, his friend would only gesture him to stop talking.

"Take that as a yes?" Alex heard his mom say as he opened his eyes. "What?" He replied as he watched the yellow stripe on the road go by the car. "I said, do you want to stop and get an ice cream somewhere?" His mom spoke.

"Sure."

Alex's mom giggled slightly and let one hand off of the steering wheel to ruffle his hair. Once she stopped, Alex fixed his what people call today, the "emo" hair. He looked down at his phone to see messages from the friend he previously saw.

'Hey wanna hangout again after school monday?'

Alex sighed, turned his phone off, and put it in his pocket. He didn't care to reply to someone who is rude to him now. Alex looked up and saw the car headlights beam on a green sign.

"It won't be too long until we get ice cream."

"Ok."

Alex looked out the passenger window once again and noticed hills forming and the trees creeping taller into the sky. The car ride was hushed as Alex could see his mother move the steering wheel a little here and there out of the corner of his eye.

"So Alex. Your father is willing to take you to school Monday." His mom said as Alex shook his head.

"No. I will walk again."

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

Alex and his father havent had the strongest bond. It is more like a love hate relationship but with more hate involved. Alex's mom looked at him and sighed. "You really don't like eachother alot, do you?" She asked, still looking at him.

Alex looked at her for a moment before looking away again at the dark road. "He's just rude." He replied as his mom placed a hand on his own. Alex quickly jerked away and folded his arms. His mother sighed as she frowned at Alex. Without his mother noticing, he saw a deer prance out from the right side of the hills and towering trees.

"Mother! A deer!"

Alex's mom quickly looked onto the road and slammed onto the breaks. The deer stopped in front of the car and stared motionless into the headlights. Alex gripped onto the seatbelt latch as his mom turned the wheel to make the car go sideways. Alex unbuckled his seatbelt and opened his car door.
