"When you wish upon a star, it's actually a satellite, and your wish has been recorded & cataloged. An agent is now assigned to your case."
"300 incoming signals from Argentina."
"Prepare for large influx from America."
"450 from Brazil."
Hologram world maps with flashing points, count-meters spinning away vast numbers and people busying about with books, files or phones in their hands, was what greeted Private Samuels on his first delve into the International Wish Station's Core. Stumbling along one of the walkways in the direction of his assigned 'Base 221', Samuels gazed at the frenzy of activity beneath him. Lists and tables kept track of wishes that had been catalogued and if they'd been Fulfilled or were currently unfulfilled, where and when they'd been catalogued, and agents that were busy Fulfilling or free to take a Wish.
A throat cleared itself above Private Samuels' head, and he looked up in surprise. Wearing the same silver uniform of the IWS' personnel as Samuels, stood a straight-backed man with obtrusive eyes and a thick moustache above his pouting lips. Samuels' saw the Corporal code on the man's shoulders and jumped to a salute.
"Fresh dish, are you? Better get used to that ruckus and get to your assignment. Wishers can't be kept waiting, Private." The Corporal barked dismissively.
Samuels nodded nervously and muttered a "Yes, sir," to the already moving on Corporal, and scurried past him along to the end of the walkway. Rows of numbers faced him, but the urgent flashing of number 221 caught his eyes.
Panting as he pulled at the handle of his new Base, Private Samuels grappled for the guide book in his pocket.
Inside was a cupboard-sized office, with a desk and chair, a computer and a shelf of files titled, 'Resources, Contacts, References and the History of Wish-Fulfilling'.
As he bumped his knees against the walls of his office on his swivelling chair, Samuels awed at his new job. Then the computer screen flashed suddenly, surprising Samuels out of his chair with an LED 'Welcome' message and notification of '1 Unread Wish'.
