exordium [noun] - the beginning of anything
"5,000 words, due monday!"
sighs and unhappy grunts echoed in the classroom. the brown walls seemed to squeeze closer to her desk, her mind already churning with possibile ways she could get out of writing this one. she'd already used the 'family death' excuse twice this semester; any more and her professor may have begun to worry she was contagious.
alexandra huffed and swept the loose papers into her notebook. it was heavy in her arms, reminding her of what used to be, the ease with which words used to spill from her pen. a chestnut-haired boy held the door open for her when she stalked towards the exit.
he nodded knowingly at her somber expression. "he's been assigning these short stories a lot lately, hasn't he?"
she shrugged and slowed her pace to allow the boy to walk next to her. "i guess. it's supposed to help us, though. it's his job."
"ha. giving us the same trite project every two weeks? helping us? sure. it's about as helpful as the shock therapy was for esther greenwood."
he had a point. this teacher was sucking all of the originality out of their bones. alexandra smiled at him.
"i'm alex."
"ezra."
"well, ezra, good luck on your story." she stopped on the sidewalk and turned to face him, tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear.
"yeah, good luck to you, too." he smiled back at her. "see you around sometime?"
alex nodded and shifted the notebook in her hands. it almost seemed a bit lighter. "see you around."
