It wasn't long ago, a few months maybe, I was passing all my college courses with flying colors, had a great group of friends, was in a stable relationship with a wonderful girl, life couldn't get any better for me; the Nevis immigrant who had come to America with nothing but a few dollars and a notebook. It all took a turn for the worst when a man by the name of John Adams was elected president. He started spewing nonsense about a "purer" America. He passed a bill through congress, I'm still not exactly sure how it got enough votes. The bill made it illegal for people to be a part of the LGBT community. President Adams, if I should even call him that, made it so anyone gay, lesbian, Bisexual, or Trans was arrested, imprisoned on the spot. When my friends and I heard the news I cried. I cried for what seemed like hours, because to me the bill not only meant facing jail time but it also meant I wouldn't be able to attend the university I had worked so hard to get into, it meant I would have to give up everything I wanted out of life. I wanted to get a law and political science degree. I wanted to work my way up through the ranks and be a big politician, I wanted the world to know my name. And all that was swept away in the blink of an eye, by some bigot in a higher position than me. After a while I heard through the grapevine that police forces were doing dorm sweeps, my friends Hercules, Lafayette, and Tamsin all packed their things, only taking what was of the utmost importance to them. I did the same. I packed some clothes, a few spiral notebooks (and pens), a palm tree and sugar cane necklace that my mother gave me, and a photo album with pictures of my family in it. We took of, running as fast and as far as we could, the four of us didn't stop for anything.

Soon enough we sought refuge in an abandoned factory, for the first week we were there I did nothing but write, I couldn't bring myself to interact with the others. I guess you could say I was in denial, desperately wishing I was in my dorm, writing a paper that wasn't due for another two weeks, but I wasn't. After a while I finally came around, started talking with Herc, Laf, and Tami more, I came to terms with the situation and together, all four of us started to fight against the new bill. And now here we are, few supplies, low morale, and a government hunting us down ruthlessly, but I couldn't be happier. Here I can be myself, surrounded by absolutely amazing people, so what if some man a couple of states away doesn't approve of me, or Herc, or Laf, or even Tami who is literally the poster child for a conservative republican on most controversial subjects. Why should we care what he thinks of us, because we sure don't.

Tamsin came over to the spot on the floor where I was sitting and looked over my shoulder, "what are you doing Lexicon?"

"Just writing a letter to the fat, arrogant, anti-charismatic, national embarrassment known as "president" John Adams." I looked back at her and grinned.

She shook her head and snorted softly. "Leave it to you to insult the president without hesitation."

A Soft frown made it's way onto my face, "why should I hesitate?! It's not like he hesitated in insulting me in his stupid press conferences! He insults all of us constantly!" I rose to a standing position, my height of 5"3 not even holding a candle to Tamsin's 6"2 stature.

She gave me a sort of glare, "I wasn't suggesting he did Alexandria, calm down."

My heart was racing as I stood on tip-toe to seem more imposing, "and if I don't?"

"If you don't I'll take away your notebooks and pens Alex, I'm not playing around. You need to learn to control your temper."

I nodded slowly, "yeah, okay, I'm sorry Tami, you're right I got worked up over nothing."

She sighed and pulled me into a hug, "just please Lexi, please try and work on it." "I will Tam, I'm trying my best." "I know you are."
