I sat outside the employee change rooms and waited for him to come back out. Now that I was alone I was beginning to rethink this. But I never took these kinds of risks, if I can keep face after nearly being run over this morning, I could spend some time with Jera. He may look a little strange but he seemed normal enough.
“Its raining, its pouring. The old man is snoring, he rolled out of bed and hit his head. Now the poor old man is dead…” I sang under my breath.
the door opened and Jera walked out dressed in light worn out blue jeans and a black V-neck t-shirt showing off part of his pale chest. He was a little wider now that he was out of the vest and shorts, he was solid muscle too. It made my face flush bright red.
I dropped my head and stared at my hands. Holy crap he was ripped, cute and nice. What ever I did to deserve this I was thankful for. Harely would die if she saw him, hell I was dying and I was sitting next to him. He tucked his hands into his pockets and glanced down at me.
His sweater was big on me, either that or I was just that small I curled my hands around the ends of the sleeves. He smiled and looked down at me, his lips quirking up at the edges.
“Something wrong Lucy?” he asked.
I shook my head quickly, “No, not at all” I stood up quickly and looked up into his face.
He smiled and wrapped his arm around my small shoulders. He led me out into the swarm of people that had now gathered inside the carnival grounds.
I looked around swept up in the festive carnival music and lights that flashed and burned in the night air. The sun had set and a cool breeze had pulled in thin grey clouds. I shivered and felt Jera hug me tighter.
“What ride first?” he asked looking down at me.
“I don’t care, you pick” I said shrugging my shoulders, I had been on every ride.
I knew every creak, drop, turn, and over all they didn’t really excite me. I enjoyed my carousel which was sitting off to the left surrounded by people. He pulled me off into the crowd away from the carousel. I stumbled after him my face bright red when I saw his hand gripped tightly in mine.
We worked our way through the entire carnival, going on the small dragon roller coaster, the drop zone. They had a Ferris wheel at the far left end of the park, which is what we stood in line for right now.
I couldn’t help the infectious smile that had been stuck on my face as we stood in the cold waiting to get on the ride. The attendant smiled at us and winked at Jera, he pulled me up into the seats and we got on.
I was sat on one side and him on the other, my stomach tightened as the ride began to rise higher up. I looked out over the entire carnival and smiled.
“It looks so beautiful” I whispered.
“Really? What are you comparing it to?” Jera asked moving over next to me rocking the seat.
I gasped and curled into him without thinking, my hands grabbing a hold of his arm. Ferris wheels always freaked me out, I kept thinking it would tip anytime and I would fall out. Jera chuckled and wrapped his arm around me pulling me in closer.
“Everything, this Carnival, its so hypnotic and mystifying really” I whispered.
“What’s your favourite part about the Carnival so far?” he asked.
I looked out over the edge of the seats at the sparkling lights and laughing people gathered below all enjoying the festivities.
“The Carousel” I whispered, “What about you?”
