Sebastian Walker, twenty-seven, was a detective. Not one of those fancy private detectives that one read of in books and newspapers now and again. Assuredly not. Although it sounded quite appealing to many, it hadn’t appealed to him in any manner. He found it quite comical; in fact, that one should choose to become a private detective. Why would any sensible individual in his or her right mind want to solve the petty issues of day to day life? “I’ve lost my purse, sir. Can you help me find it?” or, “Sir, I’ve lost my dear little kitten. Oh! She’s such a darling, but I can’t find her. Will you help me in my search for it, Detective Walker?”
No, this wasn’t what he wanted to do for the rest of his life. Listen on and on to crying women remorselessly sucking the life right out of him. He was the real deal. He was Senior Detective in the NYPD. He’d held the post for a couple of years, and was, debatably the best detective that the Department had ever produced. It was an honour to him, to learn that he was the youngest man to reach such a high position at such an early and tender age. An impeccable resume, a degree in psychology from the University of California, great physical presence due to his years as basketball captain all paved the way for an illustrious career. Professionally, he was one of the most successful detectives in the city.
Born and brought up in the streets of New York, the dark-haired young man sitting on the couch had learnt how to live life the hard way. Fortunately, he was adopted by a young couple. He had felt grateful towards them then, and felt it even now. Had it not been for their Godly presence, he would have certainly been working against the law. Life’s little irony, he liked to call it. The days in the street, on the other hand, had helped him understand criminals in a better way than any Detective or Police Officer could ever hope to.
But this was all the past. What had he presently been thinking about? Ah! His emotional life. Well, thinking about it certainly wouldn’t help, because there isn’t anything there to think about! Over the past couple of weeks, a certain void had been formed in his chest. His foster parents were urging him to marry someone and settle down. Obviously, being the sort of person who made up his own decisions, he didn’t listen to his parents. However, when he actually thought about it, he decided that they were doing it for his best. After all, he needed someone to support him, someone to love him at some point in life.
His emotional life was lifeless, and he needed to change that.
