CHAPTER 6
He didn’t ponder further on the subject, as the more he was finding out, the more confused he was getting. He went out of the room once again, but this time succeeded in not vomiting. He wanted the forensic team to first come in and go through everything, before he would go on further with the investigation. He went again to the Chief, who was looking as if he was sculpted in stone. He was standing exactly where he stood before Walker had taken his leave; looking towards the sky, his white hair looking clearer than before. “Sir,” said Walker. The Chief looked towards Walker, his eyes steady as ever. “Yes?” replied the Chief. “So you've seen the bodies. What did you make of it all?” asked Chief Rutt.
Walker kept out his own conclusions and just gave the Chief the main facts. The Chief was most surprised to hear about the open eyes. That was probably the thing that had even taken aback Walker the most. He had concluded that it was probably a sign that the victims had been murdered by a professional. His mind again wandered towards the blood on the floor. The other most baffling thing was, obviously, this unaccounted blood. For this, he didn't have any proper explanation at all. The only thing that came to his mind was that the blood wasn't theirs. This opened all sorts of new horrific possibilities, which indicated a sign of even more bodies, which was the last thing Walker wanted to deal with right now. With all these thoughts muddled up in his systematic mind, he heard Chief Rutt advising him to go back home, wait for the preliminary results from the Forensic Lab and then proceed.
1:43 a.m. Walker didn't argue, and was soon racing back to Pike Street in his Vibe, cutting through the dense night air. He reached back home in about half an hour. He went into his bedroom and opened his wardrobe, ready to change into his nightclothes. Just as he was about to crash on his bed after changing, the window in his hall shattered. The sound reverberated into his room harshly. He immediately took out his Beretta 10 millimetre from the drawer next to his bed, and went out into the hall cautiously. He switched on the light, and then went out to the window with lightning speed, his gun raised. There was nothing to aim or shoot at. He peered outside his window, but once again, to no avail. He pocketed his Beretta, but was still confused as to who or what had caused this scene.
He saw it as soon as he turned away from the window and looked to the wall behind him. There was a spear pierced into the wall. Wading through the broken glass pieces, he saw the spear clearly. It had been drilled into the wall by at least half its length. This was extremely bizarre, as the amount of strength needed to pierce the wall in such a manner through a window, was surely Herculean. Something caught Walker’s eye on the rear of the spear. A note had been carefully tied to it. Before taking off the note, Walker again checked if there was someone standing outside, near the window. The person, presumably a man, seeing the brute strength required for the effort, meant harm to him. He could easily have used the note as a distraction. While Walker would have been reading the note, he would be an easy and vulnerable target. However, there was still no one outside, much to Walker’s disappointment. He returned to the spear, and took of the note. It read, “Do not investigate any further. If you look into the matter at hand, be assured, your death will not be a merciful one.” Accustomed to threats, Walker wouldn't have been a bit scared by a letter like this. However, the way the threat had been delivered, Walker would surely have to be on his guard. Deciding that staying at Aberdeen Place any more was asking for trouble, he left immediately with a few of his belongings. He gunned down the accelerator, and was soon on his way to Junior Detective Shane Thornton’s place.
