"You're awake now, you know."
The voice comes to him before anything else- before the cold, the blinding whiteness, the sheer unending volume of space in his brain. It's perfectly even and pleasant, completely forgettable. Jack opens his eyes.
The man is standing above him, hands slung comfortably in his pockets. He's dressed all in white, down to his shoes. He's completely ordinary- average length hair somewhere between blonde and brunette, common brown eyes, average height and build. Nothing at all to distinguish himself- no tattoos, facial hair, scars. He's forgettable.
Jack sits up slowly and looks around. The whiteness goes on forever. There is no ceiling, no walls, nothing around them but...... white.
"I'm dead." His deep voice seems even more at odds compared to the other's neutral tone.
The stranger gives a small smile. "Are you?"
Jack gets shakily to his feet and looks down. Jeans, boots, black tee shirt and matching black Dickies coat. Had he ever worn this before?
He tries desperately for an emotion, anything. "Not exactly how I pictured Heaven." He swallows. "Purgatory, maybe? Limbo?"
The stranger shrugs. "Your place, Jack. I'm just the guide."
Jack feels panic coming on. "I don't remember anything. Nothing. What was my life like? How old am I? Was I married??" He's panting now, tugging at his hair, in a wild state about the complete emptiness of his mind. "I don't have any memories!" The shout seems to ripple the white around them.
The stranger looks apologetic. "That's how it goes, unfortunately. You know what they say; You Are Here. Here is where we start."
"But what is Here?" Jack asks, frustrated. "I don't remember anything about.... ANYTHING. Am I alive? Did I die?? Have I lived yet?"
The stranger smiles at Jack. "Does it really even matter if you don't remember? You don't have any memories. What's to miss?"
