"Ladies and gentlemen, this is a door closure announcement my name is Jennifer and I'm your chief flight attendant. On behalf of captain Rhoades and the entire crew, welcome aboard flight 579 Of virgin airlines. non-stop service from London Gatwick to Kansas City international airport" ... The all too familiar speech drowning my ears for the 12th time this year.
"I swear I could tell you this backwards" I painfully said to my mum sitting in the booth next to me. Mums management insist we take first class 'Your mother must rest my dear, with the talent that lady holds. She's only entitled to the finest seat available' he reminds me before every flight.
" I know darling, just try get some sleep. We have a long flight ahead" mum sweetly replies.
"At this time, make sure your seat backs and tray tables are in their full upright position and that your seat belt is correctly fastened. Also, your portable electronic devices must be set to 'airplane' mode until an announcement is made upon arrival. Thank you."8 and a half hours later we arrived in Kansas. Somehow I managed to sleep the entire journey, thinking about it it probably wasn't a good idea. I can never handle jet lag and I doubt that's going to help. Airports just might have to be the downfall of all this, I mean. I'm endlessly great full for how successful mum's company has become but the travelling has to be the worst part. Hey. I guess it's not all bad, I don't have to worry about suitcases or holding a million bags at a time. Everything gets shipped over the night before with all mum's materials.
"Jessica darling stay close, you know I'd never forgive myself if I lost you" mum says whilst gripping onto my hand.
"It's ok mum, I'm not going anywhere" we walk hand in hand through the airport until we reach the arrivals gate. Of course mum's practically 100 man team is all-ready and waiting for us to emerge from the gate.
"Miss Wakeley, this way!" The chauffeur called through the crowd of people. Honestly the extremes that management go to is insane, she's here to make a wedding dress not give birth to a royal baby. As soon as we get into the car all the commotion and stressful women bombard mum with jobs that need to be done.
"Miss Wakeley, we have some patch samples you need to look at"
"Miss Wakeley, on behalf of the team I'd like to advise a dress rehearsal for the wedding" a dress rehearsal? For a wedding. Honestly these people. I can tell mum's stressed already, her job is to make and design the dress. Nothing else.
"Well isn't that your job" I simply say to the girls seated in front of us.
"Jessica! That's enough!" Mum snaps at me. The girls sat in silence for a second before turning back to each other with confusion from what I can tell.
"Please Jess we do not want a repeat of summer, do we?" Mum questions me firmly. Last summer the entire team walked out on us because I defended myself after a certain important person questioned why I was present in the production hall.
"No mum, sorry mum" I replied in a complete monotone voice. After a painfully long car journey we arrived in Wichita. Of course the largest city in Kansas is where management chose to accommodate us. Ambassador hotel, home for the next 3 months.
