Jace stared at the wall. "Now what?" He asked, not making a single effort to hide the annoyance clear in his voice. Clary stifled a giggle. She'd been trying to get him to listen to her but Jace was Jace,  an annoying, sarcastic and self - centred boy who was astonishingly gentle to the ones he loved.

It was his birthday but he was trying as hard as he could to forget it as it was one connection to Valentine he could not hide. Clary, however had diferent ideas and was doing her best to give him the best surprise birthday party she could possibly organise in the midst of the possible ending of the world. "Now,"said Clary" you turn around and ..........Ta da!"Jace turned and was mortified.  There was a huge banner reading 'Happy Birthday ♥Jace♥' and the mess hall was covered in balloons with the number 17 on them. It looked more like the party kept in Mc'Donalds than a sophisticated party for a about-to-enter-manhood 17 year-old. At least this proved that ignoring his birthday didn't  exactly give him the results expected.

"What the...." He was too shocked to even swear properly, something which happened once in a blue moon. Issabele snorted and quickly forced it into a cough. So did a lot of people including Clary, Alec, Maryse and Magnus-who was coughing obnoxiously loud." Well, looks like we have the flu spreading in the Institute." observed Jace dryly.

"Luckily we have Magnus on duty!"said Izzy in an all to cheerful voice.

"Well," Jace started " Good to know I live with people who remember ones birthday. At least I can warn the other Shadowhunters to never disclose personal information to the Lightwoods."

"Thanks," Alec's original smile was now looking more like a grimace     " Wait, were you being sarcastic?" Jace laughed and suddenly the then-dark hall looked all too bright. "Oo-kay" Magnus, who hadn't seen Jace light up like a lamp muttered."At least we have a backup emergency light in hand."

Indeed, Jace was truly glowing like a lit fireplace.
