6. Jovial Alliances

Clary stood there, staring at the couch, in astonishment. Where was the girl? Surely she hadn't got up to get some water or something. She was too weak.

It was only then that she noticed something. The couch which she thought had been empty, was not empty at all. For there, wrapped in brown paper was a package, with string and ribbon and all.

Out of sheer curiosity, she walked over and touched the packet tentatively. Seeing it hadn't exploded, she pulled the string, and she saw a weird figure. At first glance, one would see it as the statue of a bird, with only the wings, not the body. But to one of the Shadowhunter world, who had seen them for what they were, it would be clear.

It wasn't many 'birds' that had golden blood all over their wings. They were wings all right, but not any wings. They were the wings of an Angel.

Soon, everyone was sitting in the library to discuss the arrival of the wings. Seeing this arrangement, Clary had a severe case of dèja vu. It reminded her of yesterday, when the Asian girl had come, and it was eerie.

"Well " said Mayrse"As we all know, we are here to discuss the mysterious disappearance of our 'guest' and the arrival of the wings-which, as we have all agreed, are connected. Along with the wings, we have found a note, which shall be passed around the room."

When it reached Clary, it took all her willpower not to scream in terror. For there, on the paper were few words, but they were words that inscribed fear.

I am coming.

Clary gave the paper to Jace, who was sitting beside her. Jace had seen the fear on her face before she could conceal it, and, with his brow furrowed, he read the note, his face a solid mask.

She couldn't understand what he felt, and she didn't want to.

Closing her eyes, she thought of any way this could be connected to the disappearance of the girl. A Shadowhunter, a stranger. Wings, Angelic. Golden ichor. Angels, summonings. Summoning, large areas. Woods.

"He's probably in the woods!" Clary blurted out.

Everyone turned and stared at her. " How do you know that, Clary?"asked Jocelyn

"It's obvious, isn't it? I mean, to get the wings, Sebastian needed to summon the angels. And to summon the angels, he needed huge areas far from civilisation, so as not to be disturbed. I doubt he'd summon 30 feet tall angels in the middle of the street. So, the most promising answer would be something obvious enough, that we would be oblivious to it: the woods."

For a few seconds, everyone was quiet.

"She's right."said Jace " It's an obvious enough answer that we would ignore it."

" He's brilliant" said Luke "Evil, but brilliant."

A little while later, when the meeting had been adjourned, Jace took Clary to the greenhouse, to while away the time.

Sitting on a bench, a quarter to midnight, Clary was painting on her sketchpad. She loved painting. It was the only place -other than Jace's arms- that she forgot all about Sebastian and the end of the world.

She was painting just the background,  as she was waiting for the flowers to bloom.

Oblivious to her, Jace was staring at her. He was staring at the curve of her lip, the bend in her hip, the way her delicate hands moved about the paper, bringing the painting to life. It was then that he knew. He was the paper, and she was the painter, bringing him to life.

Just then, the flowers burst open, glowing against the darkness, like a spark of hope.

He saw Clary's face glow in the light from the flowers, and he knew what he must do. And he would do it.

When Clary looked up from the paper, Jace was kneeling, his eyes soft and vulnerable.

"Clarissa " He said "I am yours and I have always been yours and I will forever been yours. Words cannot express my love for you and so I ask of you one thing. Would you do me the incredible honour of marrying me?"

Clary sat there, stunned. But she knew. Deep within she knew. This was how it was meant to be.

"Yes" she whispered
