Why do people say this when they are recommending really good food? If you are one of these people, know that there are people out there whom are suicidal, even if they don't show it. What if they came to the restaurant that you meet them in after considering suicide? Then you will be the reason for the death of a person.
Like I said, "to die for" isn't the best term. So what else is there? To live for? This might seem OK, since it's referencing that even if you have no reason to live, this will give you one? Maybe. This doesn't seem right. How about we don't skew English. Let's just say "this food is amazing", OK? So much easier.
A side note here. You can make one sentence consisting of say, 6 words, and depending on where you accent, it has a new meaning. For example: I didn't say he did it! I didn't say he did it! I didn't say he did it! I didn't say he did it! I didn't say he did it! I didn't say he did it! The English language is weird.
