The bell rang, and I gathered my papers together and walked out of class, glad that I didn't have to listen to the teacher drone on about Christopher Columbus and the Americas anymore.

"Hey, Ave!" My best friend, Faith Willmore, said. She waits outside of my class every afternoon because she's a year younger than me and doesn't have her license yet. I drive her home from school, but not to school because she spends her first 2 hours at a beauty school learning how to cut hair or something.

"Hey, Fai, how are you?" I ask, preparing myself for her bounciness.

"Oh, I'm terrific! Today was amazing, in my first class we learned a new braid, and - oh! You should let me show you! It's soooo pretty, you'd just love it!" She made a puppy face at me, begging with her eyes.

"Not right now, Faith." I said, not wanting her to mess with my hair. I wasn't really into all of that, makeup and hairstyles and all.

"Later then? You could take me home with you!"

"Um, no. I'm not going to be home later, actually." I smiled at the thought of my date with Bryce, as much as a player as he is, he still is every girl's dream boyfriend.

"Oooh! You have a date? With who? Does he go to our school? It is a he, right?" She looked suspiciously at me then, finally giving me time to answer.

"Yes, I do. Yes, HE goes to our school."
I said, emphasizing the he. Last year a couple of jerks had spread the rumor that I was a lesbian and since I don't dress in the preppy clothes and don't care about 'girly' things, it had stuck.
This year though, no ones mentioned it. Faith likes to tease me about it and forever is trying to do my makeup.

"Who is it? Come on, you can't leave me hanging!"

"And why not?" I said, smirking. Messing with her is hilarious because she is so dramatic over everything that her reactions are priceless.

"Pleaseeeeeeeeee tell me! I'll love you forever!" She says, bouncing as we walked.

"Oh, you already do and you know it."
I said, laughing.

"Come oooon, Aves! Tell me! You know deep down inside you want to tell little ole me all about it, am I right?" She said, winking at me.

"Whatever, Faith. But, ok, he is like, perfect and sooo handsome and if I tell you you'll be sooo jealous so I'm just sparing your own feelings by not telling you, ok?" I said, blushing.

She stomped her foot, looking adorable instead of intimidating, which I know was what she was going for.

"Ugh, fine! I'm going out with Bryce tonight."

"Whaaaat!? Bryce? As in, THE Bryce? Bryce WEST!?"

"Yes, Bryce West. He asked me this morning."

"Oh my god, oh my god, you have soooooo got to let me do your makeup and hair!"
I was tempted to actually accept her offer, because as much as I hated to admit it, I was kind of excited to go on a date with him. But I better not get my hopes up, he never stays with anyone long.
"No, he's gonna get me at 6. I only have 2 hours as it is to get ready..."

"So... let me do your makeup! You can wear those nice light blue skinny jeans and your pretty grey shirt with the chevron style and your grey converse with pink fingernails and pretty pink lip gloss, and -oh I can just see it!!- a nice braid in your hair, oh my god, Avery, with your long blond hair I'll be able to do the best styles! And you have to wear your pink heart necklace, and your pink belt! And-"

"Ok, ok, I get it! Fine, you can come over."

"Yay!! This is going to be so much fun!"

"Oh, be quiet Faith."

The doorbell rang just as Faith finished applying my lip gloss, and I heard my mom answer the door. I pressed my ear against the door of my room, straining to hear the conversation downstairs.

"-here to pick up Avery-"
"-handsome young man-"
"-you have a beautiful daughter-"
"-Treat her well-"
"-and I promise-"
"-back by 10:30-"

I opened my door and turned around to see Faith on my bed, giving me a grin and a big thumbs up.
"Go get 'em, kitten! Or should I say go get him? Oh, and use protection!"

"Whatever, Faith." I said, playfully scowling before walking downstairs.

I think Bryce's jaw touched the ground when he saw me.
