[ Mikaela ]

I stood in the soaking rain as my bags were tossed out of my apartment onto the wet asphalt. "Get lost!!" the landowner barked at me before slamming the door. This is it... I look sadly at my two luggages, they were only filled with clothes and a few belongings. I walked in between my luggages and gripped the handles, lifting their light weights.

Suddenly a bus drove by sending a wave of murky water that collided on my body. I was completely soaked to the bone. My teeth chattered like never before and my hair was dripping with the scent of wet dog. "THANK YOU!" I screamed at the sky.

Curse my luck. It's always been an upside-down goat shoe for me.

I lfted my bags and dragged my feet down the road, feeling the rain drops sliding down my face and back like tears.

I wondered if angels were crying right now.

I wondered if there was anyone or anything in this world that gave a damn about me.

And if they did I wondered if they had the heart to do something.

Anything.

I stopped by a cafe window and stared in. A warm golden light lit the cozy room. A family was sitting by the glass.

A father.

A mother.

A brother and sister.

A family.

I dropped my bags and wrapped my arms around myself. I began to wonder why some people had it better than others. Were we just screwed in a lottery or was it fate? If it's fate, what did I do to deserve such a crappy life.

Suddenly the chilling rain stopped, yet I could still hear the raindrops and seeing them slither down the glass window. I saw a figure reflected in the glass in front of me and I turned.

There was an old man with a warm smile on his face. He was wrapped in thick warm clothes and held an umbrella up for me. "Hello, Mikaela"

[ Nicholas ]

I woke up hearing the sound of rain hitting the windows. UGH. I hate the noise. Isn't there someone around here who isn't useless and can stop that freaking noise??

I looked to my right seeing a red head curled in my arm. "Morning Stacey" I whispered in her hair.

She looked up at me with a smile on her lips, her emerald eyes sparkling. "Good morning.." she said then those sweet emerald eyes darkened and she striked me across the cheek. "Any my name is Katherine by the way" she hissed at him.

I rubbed my burning cheek. Oh yeah...Katherine....RIGHT....

"Don't call me EVER AGAIN." Katherine growled getting out of bed and pulling on her clothes. She stormed out of the room.

Nicholas's head fell back in the pillows. Girls. They were so dramatic sometimes. How was I supposed to know her name was Katherine? I mean she looked like a Stacey...Or an Emily...

An old woman with grey hair and sharp dark coloured eyes entered the room. Her hair was tied in a tight bun as she looked at him in disgust. "Master Nicholas, Master Nathaniel is out at the moment taking care of some business matters in town" Madame Mildred said.

She was the senior maid of Grandfather Nathaniel. The only OLD maid around here. The old hag hasn't left no matter what I threw at her. Grandfather Nathaniel won't allow me to fire her.

I sat up and rested against my bed board in the large room. My chest bare. "So what's he doing in town?" I asked with a sigh as I rubbed my eyes.

She pursed her lips and crossed her arms. "Finding a new maid for you"

[ Mikaela ]

"A maid?" Mikaela asked as she rode in the limo with Nathaniel. She never knew Nathaniel was rich, she just knew he was a close friend of her parents. "For your...grandson?" Mikaela cocked a brow. "I thought you told me he was a spoiled brat"

Nathaniel chuckled weakly. "Yes he is, that is why I strongly believe you are perfect for this job" he smiled at her. "You have this strong determination that I believe can match his selfishness" he explained. "And this is the only way I can think of to help you with your financial difficulty"

Mikaela couldn't believe what she was hearing. Nathaniel was helping her. Their relationship wasn't as significant as his relationship with her parents. They just occasionally met at the coffee shop on Brooklyn Street and told each other stories. She couldn't believe her luck. Her got shoe was finally turning upwards.

"Of course I don't need your immediate answer, I could always wait-"

"NO I'LL TAKE IT!" She interrupted. She was desperate. Working for Nathaniel's family shouldn't be too bad, the old man was a great guy. She felt like working for the rich in their cozy homes was the best chance she was going to get.

Nathaniel blinked from surprise. "Um...Okay when can you start?"

"NOW would be nice"

---------------------------------------

Mikaela entered the large double doors that were opened by an old lady. "Um Hello I'm Mikaela Clover, the new maid" she said timidly in the presence of this woman who looked like a refined maid whose worked here for years.

"Yes, I know...I didn't think he'd choose such a young one..." she muttered.

"What?"

"Never mind... I am Madame Mildred, the head maid of Hawthorne Manor" she introduced. "Follow me, Mikaela" she said with her nose in the air. Her slim glasses were slipping down her thin tipped nose as she walked up the swept stairs.

She led Mikaela through corridors lined with paintings of past Hawthorne's and their legacies. She stopped in front of two dark mahogany doors. "Master Nicholas, I have brought the new maid" Madame Mildred announced before gesturing for Mikaela to enter first.

Mikaela entered the room, her eyes wide. Admiring all the red satin and gold lining on the bed sheets and pillows. The floor was fully carpeted red. And there was a large canopy of blood red curtains that draped around the corners of the king-sized bed.

She saw a head of dark hair poke out from the side of the bed and she smiled. "Hello sir, I'm Mikaela..." her words trailed off when she realized that the man was naked. Her mind took too much time to process as her eyes travelled up from his feet to his head before she could realize he was naked.

He looked up at her while he was trying to pull some clothes on and didn't seemed fazed at all. "Oh hey there love, I'm Nicholas" he grinned.
