"Sweetie, wake up. It's time to leave." my moms voice is far away in my head. I woke up from fainting an hour ago and all I have done is stare at the blue walls as tears slowly roll from my eyes. Blue is supposed to be a happy color, like the ocean, or the sky. But here in this room, it haunts me. There is nothing happy about it.
My mother and father have been trying to comfort me for the past hour, telling me that God has a plan for me and everything is going to work out. But what could God's plan possibly be to take away something that I depend on so deeply? There has been few important things in my life and one of those happens to be my horse, Toby. Horse jumping has been my passion since I was a little kid around eight. So how could taking away my legs be a plan?
The nurses come into the room to lift me into a wheel chair. I don't think people understand what it feels like to know that you will be stuck in something for the rest of your life. I can still feel my legs but I just can't move them. No matter how hard I try they are just there, unmoved.
After signing my release forms, my mom wheels me out to our truck. With the help of my father, they lift me into the back seat and I shudder into the warm leather seat. The tears threaten to seep out, but I pray for them to leave.
My father hops into the truck, resting his hands above to heater to warm them.
"How long was I in the hospital?" my voice sounds strange, maybe because of the lack of use or because of the sadness I'm feeling inside.
My mothers eyes light up in surprise. "Two weeks, you were in a light coma for the first week and a little bit into the second week." My father clears his throat a few times as if hearing her words break him.
"Oh. Well, what happened in the accident?" I whisper. This time, the words come with the tears.
"I don't think this is a good time, Claire." my dad says firmly.
"Well when is a good time, dad? Because all I know is I woke up in a hospital and now I can't use my legs!?" I scream out the words. The tears are coming harder now, dampening my hospital gown. I can't stop the loud sobs as they escape my mouth. "What happened to me in that accident?!" I scream the words so loud that my throat aches.
My father pulls off the roads and slams on his brakes. Killing the car, he turns around. "Claire, you swerved off the road to avoid a deer."
The images come back, I was listening to "Found me" by The Fray when I saw the deer standing in the road and I swerved without thinking.
"The deer was found dead on the road along with your car wrapped around a tree. Your car flipped around three time before crashing into a it." He takes a ragged gasp of breathe. "The police said you were so lucky to be alive. That if you would have flipped once more then you would have been dead." His voice cracks and he lays his head into his hands.
My body goes numb and I can't think about my useless legs. All I care about is how scared my family must have been. They didn't know how things would have turned out. It's not their faults that I was in the accident.
"I'm sorry for yelling, Dad. Really, I was just worked up, but I'm fine now. We'll figure this out together. I have you guys." I try to smile but it doesn't reach my face.
Taking short, labored breaths, my dad looks up at me and gives a shallow grin. However, his eyes still show the sadness that is resting inside his heart.
"Thank you, sweetie. It's not so bad. We'll figure this out."
My mom's cold pale face continues to stare out the window at the icy world around her..
