"How do you know about him." I croaked as my throat began to close up.
"I know a lot of things about you Anna. I know that you suffer from memory loss." He said in a deep tone as he circled around me.
It was true I could only remember certain things. I had just remembered what happened to Chase for the first time. I don't have any memories from before the boss found me. And I could already feel the memory of Chase slowly slipping away from my mind. The only thing I can remember from before the boss found me is the shadows. No matter where I run or where I hide they always find me. They were a part of me. And that was something that over time I learned I would never be able to change.
"What do you want?" I asked watching him cautiously refusing to let him escape my sight. Not because of his good looks I might add. Those dark brown eyes and long brown hair didn't phase me as far as I was concerned he was just another one of those men from the place of flashing lights and loud music.
"Nothing really. I am just the first of many that will come for you. Except unlike the others who will seek you out to have a chat and a cup of tea." He stopped circling me and cocked his head to the side smiling dangerously. "I'm here to kill you."
Instead of waiting around to see whether or not he was serious I kicked him in the groin and ran up the stairs to my apartment complex. I didn't even think of turning around to see if he was following as I entered the building and ran into my apartment. The second I burst through the door I called 911 and told them what was happening as I grabbed my emergency bag and opened the window so I could climb out the moment I heard him jiggle the handle. I had been prepared for this to happen for years.
"Knock knock!" He laughed from the other side of the door as he began to kick down the door.
Instead of waiting around for him to let himself in I jumped out the window but instead of landing on concrete like I should've I literally fell through the ground and into a pool of darkness. I mentally face palmed myself for not sensing them. But it was too late now I could feel them swirling around me. Shadows were soulless creatures that simply craved life, well my life in particular. I knew it was no point in resisting them so I let them take me over.
The shadows cold tendrils reached for me eagerly once they realized I wasn't going to fight. This had happened before sometimes I fight and sometimes I don't. They always came to me and when they did I'd wake up to find that something horrible had happened. When I was younger they'd take over all the time which is why I have selective memory. Once they take over I black out the darkness takes over me and blinds me of all of my senses as the shadows do whatever they want with my body. I could feel the coldness from the emptiness inside of them creeping towards my heart but I couldn't stop them it was too late. I felt them rejoicing at getting the chance to live again and I knew they could feel me slipping away again.
"Waaattttccccchhhh as we take revenge on the one who seeksssss you." They whispered giving me my sight back but not control.
I could feel my body moving as the shadows adjusted to this form yet again. I could see through my eyes but that's what they wanted. I could see everything and feel everything as they rose from the shadows. I looked up to see the man from earlier looking down at me from the window I had jumped out of only moments ago.
"There you are." He sneered as he jumped out of the window and started to walk towards me. Instead of running away like I wanted to, the shadows wouldn't let me. My feet stayed planted in place just like the shadows wanted them too.
"Oh were you looking for me?" My voice said. It sounded like me but in a way it didn't. This voice sounded dark and venomous.
"Not so afraid now are you?" the stranger smirked at me as he aimed his gun at me. "Any last words?"
I wanted to run. My insides were screaming at me to run. But the shadows still wouldn't let me.
"Three actually. Go. To. Hell." My voice growled.
"Interesting choice of words." He laughed as he fired at me.
I closed my eyes preparing to enter eternal darkness known as death. But I didn't die. I didn't even feel any pain. I smiled to myself not knowing that death could be this peaceful.
"Open your eyyyyessss." The shadows hissed at me forcing my eyes open. When I opened them I noticed I was was standing still but I was looking at the man from a different angle. Judging by his reaction he was just as confused as I was.
"How in the hell?" He whispered to himself loud enough for the shadows to hear him and snicker softly.
The shadows were enjoying themselves immensely but I on the other was not. I was so scared that if I had control over my body I would've passed out.
"I thought you were going to kill me. I'm starting to think you lied." I felt my mouth turn up into a smirk.
"Don't worry sugar I always keep my word." He laughed readjusting his aim right before he fired. This time he fired several shots at once rather than just one. But like the first time when I opened my eyes I was looking at him from a different angle again.
"We will protecccttt youuu." the shadows hissed in my mind.
I believed them they'd done so this far so what reason did I have not to trust them? Why did I have this nagging feeling in the back of my mind that I was making the wrong choice? I knew they would protect me but to what extent would they go to do so?
"Maybe if you stood still I could keep my word." He growled clenching his teeth.
"Well sorry sugar. But your turn is over. My turn now." I snarled as I stalked towards him. Why on earth were the shadows going towards the guy who wanted me dead???
As I stalked closer and closer to him he backed away firing countless bullets at me in an attempt to stop my progression upon him. After he realized bullets were ineffective he raised his hands in front of his face and began to come towards me again. Once he was about a good 4 feet away from me he threw his first punch. Rather than making contact with my face like he intended I grabbed his wrist in midair and twisted it around until it made a sickening cracking noise. He fell to the ground cradling his hand to chest as he cried like a little girl.
"See? We brought this man who had the intentionssss of killing you to his kneessss. We will do the same to anyone an everyone who intends to do harm to you. We shall come to you aid whenever you need our assistanccce." The shadows hissed inside of my mind. Before I could respond I felt them slip from my body and disappear back into the abyss of darkness in which they came.
Instead of letting the fear I felt inside of me bring me to my knees as well I ran to the nearest bus stop leaving the man and his broken hand behind. Once I reached the bus stop stood next to the bench and looking around before I decided it was safe to catch my breath.
A few minutes later a long silver bus pulled up. As the door opened to let me aboard I took a quick glance around to make sure it was still safe then I climbed on. I gave the bus driver my fare and sat all the way in the back not even taking the time to look at the other passengers.
