I was driving with Kendo and Vicki in their jeep to the beach. I could smell the salt in the air, telling me we were close. I had already changed into my wet suit to save time, so when we arrived and Kendo and Vicki began to change in the car, I was running in the sand to the water.
"I'm heading out first! See ya on the waves!" I shout.
"Okay! Ride em' girl!" Kendo replied.
"Just be careful Katie!" Vicki yelled after me.
I grabbed my surf board and paddled out to the waves. I was the fastest swimmer and best surfer in our small town of Lanos. There was no need to be worried. Near by there were three guys, two trying to surf. Key word, TRYING. They kept falling off. The third guy seemed to be their teacher. I paddled over to them.
"What's a chick like you doin' on these rocky waves?" The first one said.
"You should be on the shore showing off that hot body of yours." The second one flirted.
The third one stared at me for a bit than his eyes widened in surprise.
"You're Katie 'Waves' Pyro!"
I smiled widely at the recognition. The two flirts looked at me in shock. I began to paddle to a wave.
"Watch and learn boys!"
I descended up the wave and stood up. I just swirled around on my board before doing handstands and flips at the top. The wind in my face made my short light blue hair blow wildly. I kept on going for a minute when, sadly, I met the edge of the wave. By now Kendo and Vicki were talking to the guys.
"That was amazing! Name's Laden." Laden complimented.
"You killed it!" Kendo said as he gave me a high five.
"You could have hurt yourself Katie." Vicki stated.
"But I didn't!" I replied.
She playfully rolled her eyes before lying back down on her floaty. She never really was a surfer, unlike me and Kendo. But we saved her from an eel in a coral reef ten years ago. Ever since then we've been friends. Well, Kendo and Vicki started dating five years ago and they wanted me to get a boyfriend as well. I told them simply, "The sea is my friend." They got even more concerned after that, but when I won the surfing championship a few weeks after our argument, they saw how happy I was and I guess they just gave up.
"I'm going again!" I shouted.
"We'll watch!" Kendo replied.
"Don't hurt yourself." Vicki warned.
"Do your best." Laden added.
I was riding when suddenly a small wave came up and hit my legs. I saw my friends faces turned horrified before my head was submerged. The bands that connected me to my board fell loose and I kept sinking. My right leg scraped some coral before I started to go into a ravine. I could here Kendo's voice echoing through the water and Vicki's frantic kicks. I felt water enter my lungs and black spots clouded my vision. I tried to swim up, but pain shot through my leg and I could only descend down. I passed out before hearing an echoing voice that sounded as if it we right next to my ear.
"I'll protect you Katie . . . . I promise . . . ."
