Harry POV

I walked down the halls of Sutton Grammar School for Boys, quietly humming along to the music on my iPod. I looked around the crowded hallway at the groups of kids hanging out and chatting about pointless things. Rolling my eyes at a few conversations, I continued walking until I reached my locker. I entered my combination, opening my locker and pulling out a few books.  I closed my locker only to come face to face with Liam Payne; my locker neighbor, Mom’s best friend’s son, and extreme fanboy of Taylor Lautner and Beyoncé.  He was beaming at me and bouncing on the heels of his feet, mouth moving rapidly. I furrowed my eyebrows.

“What?” I asked him, most likely relatively loud considering I couldn’t hear myself over my music (which I am not turning off, thank you very much).

He put his hand on his hip and looked at me with an irritated expression.

“Take those headphones out will you?”

I grinned. “Not a chance mate, not until a teacher tells me to and even then probably not.”

He rolled his eyes and shook his head but continued speaking anyway. “Honestly I don’t even know how you function in society. You have your headphones in constantly! How do you even know what the hell is going on?”

“Two words; lip reading.” I smirked. He just stared at me expressionlessly.  Shifting uncomfortably under his gaze, I spoke.

“So what were you going to tell me?”

He face lit up (I knew it would) and he began bouncing again and talking rapidly. “Oh my god did you see Taylor’s new photoshoot?! He is hot, like his abs DAMN! I want abs like that! Also, do you know what Bey tweeted the other day? She is an absolute Queen…”

At some point I couldn’t keep up with him anymore, so I merely nodded and grinned when I deemed it appropriate.  I breathed a sigh of relief when Liam stopped mid-sentence, signaling the bell.  He glared at before closing his locker and continued to talk to me on our way to class about whatever he was talking about, despite knowing full well that I wasn’t listening.  We entered homeroom and Liam walked over to Niall, Sam and Zayn; greeting them with smiles and hugs. I just nodded at them and made my way to the back of the classroom, far away from the annoying cliques.

Sitting at a lonely desk near the window, I began drumming my fingers on the desk in tune to the beat as I observed the school campus, smiling when I saw some ginger kid racing across it, guitar in hand. Musicians. I felt a tap on my shoulder and turned to face Josh Devine.  Speaking of musicians.

“May I ask why you’re sitting alone again like a sad little orphan?”

“May I ask why you care?”

“Dunno, I just feel like you don’t really talk to people and you know if you ever want someone to hang out with…”

I smiled. “Ok erm maybe.” He smiled, contented and walked back over to his group. I shook my head.

People are so easy to please; all it takes is knowing what makes them tick. And you only know what makes them tick, by observation. To them, I may seem strange; constantly wearing headphones and spending time alone rather than with friends, but to me it’s all very logical, scientific almost. People watching is intriguing because you can learn so much about the human mind, but cutting out all the useless bits and focusing on the important parts. Ignore the lies and meaningless babble, and focus on the details, the miniscule actions, the subconscious behaviors and you can uncover the truth.

I was snapped out of my thoughts by a presence looming over me in front of my desk. Looking up, I saw my homeroom teacher looking down at me, arms crossed, tapping his foot. Behind him was the whole class observing the scene.

“Mr. Styles, you are class put away the headphones.”

“Technically sir this is homeroom which isn’t a class…”

He glared at me. “Don’t talk back to me. Put away your Mp3 player now or I’ll have to give you a detention.” He spat before spinning on his heel and marching back up to his desk, while the class snickered at me. I rolled my eyes are their childish behavior, reluctantly turning off my iPod and putting it away.

“Who still calls it an Mp3 player anyway?” I grumbled under my breath. Exhaling deeply to calm myself down, I was pleased to note that the class had already found more interesting topics to discuss than me. Looking over at the lads I sighed. I might as well attempt to be social now that I don’t have my music. Reluctantly, I forced myself to stand up and drag my feet across the room to sit down with them.

“Hey Harry!” Niall welcomed enthusiastically. I nodded and forced a smile. Liam was babbling to Zayn about Beyoncé’s  new surprise album, while Niall had his arm casually draped over his friend Sam’s shoulder. They were the best of friends and the school’s top ‘bromance’, although no one really understood why they were friends. Sam was a bad boy with tattoos, while Niall was tattoo less and a surprisingly good (considering his height) basketball player. At least that’s what they appeared to be. I had observed differently however, so I understood their friendship… at least to some extent. I couldn’t fathom the telling each other everything and hanging out nearly 24/7 part of it, but then again I am mildly antisocial.

“Yeah man, I got a new tat the other day. It’s still healing that why I have this bandage you see?” Sam said, while Niall just shook his head chuckling.

“Man, I seriously don’t understand your obsession with tattoos or how your parents let you get ‘em. But they do look cool.”

 “Thanks mate.”

“No probs dude ya know I love you.” Niall chuckled, kissing Sam’s temple. Sam screwed his face up in mock disgust and scrubbed at the spot Niall had kissed.

“Ew I don’t want your leprechaun cooties!”

“Sure ya don’t, sure ya don’t.”

I chuckled at their banter as the bell rang and I wordlessly grabbed my bag and left the room, unlike the others who waited for each other.  Walking down the halls I resisted the urge to grab my iPod and turn it back on, deeming it counterproductive and pointless. Sighing, I settled for humming to myself as I navigated through the sea of idiots- I mean students- and tried to drown them all out.

“Hey man can fish drown?” I heard one kid ask their friend.

I internally face palmed. It’s going to be a long day.
