It wasn't always like this. I used to have a family.
Now they're all dead.
I take another hit to the face, not like there's not a lot already. I dropped my backpack a while ago, but I could have used my biology book as weapon of self-defense. I should have thought of that earlier dammit.
I take a punch to the gut, then feel my body fall onto the pavement. "What are you going to do now Alex? Are you going to be a baby and cry?" The boy taunts. The group of boys laugh at me. All I do is stare.
"Why wont you answer? Are you going to be a baby?!" Another boy yells, stepping towards me. I shift backwards and he smirks.
"She's scared!" He yells, making them all laugh. I remember how I got into this mess, they we're laughing about my mom. How she died in a fatal car-crash. Then they attempted to take my wallet.
Suddenly, I hear a man shouting at the boys. "Leave her alone! She's suffered enough!" He yells at them.
"And what are you going to do about it old man?!" The first boy yells.
"I could call the cops. You took her money, I think that's called mugging." The man says. The boys stare then turn to me. They drop my wallet and run.
I look at the man, he walks over to me and looks at me. He hands me by backpack and helps me up. "Are you ok?" he asks. I don't answer him right away. I simply nod my head.
"Do you mind telling me your name?" He asks. I stay silent, "Do you want me to call your parents?" I stare at him and frantically shake my head. "Ok, ok. Did they do something or-"
"They're dead..." I whisper. He makes an O with his mouth and offers his hand. "My name is Bucky Barnes. And you are?"
"Alex."
"Alex, ok. Do you have any family or, anyone taking care of you?" Bucky asks. I shake my head again, "I've been on my own for six months."
He nods. "you look a little beat up, do you want me to patch you up? I promise, nothing will happen to you." I wearily nod, and he leads me to his small apartment.
That was six months ago.
I wake up on my usual mattress. From the clock on the wall, it's about 10:00 am. I roll over and grab a change of clothes and hop into the small shower. Afterwards, I just put on a pair of black jeans, a blue and black flannel and an army green jacket, that was a little big for me.
Dad was probably getting some groceries from the market. It was the perfect day to go down to the small bookshop next door. I grab my wallet, it doesn't have much but its enough. I put it into my messenger bag, as well as my phone and a few other things.
I slip on my worn pair of converses and practically run to the bookstore. I open the door and look at the old books. "Ah, hello Alex," Ms.Greenwall says with a mythical smile. "Hello, I was wondering if you had a copy of The Hobbit. It doesn't need to be brand new, but maybe a hardcover?"
"Ah yes," she says, walking towards one of the shelves. She pulls out a ladder and moves some old papers around, before she smiles to herself. "I have it," she hands it to me, "Its about 35 years old. But, it doesn't look that worn. The binding is good," The old woman says. I nod, and pull out my wallet.
"Oh, no need for that. I've been trying to get rid of things from that shelf forever," She chuckles. I giggle, until I get a text from my dad.
Alex, get home now. Something isn't right.
I thank, Ms.Greenwall again and I run up the secret way to the apartment. I climb the fire escape into the window. Once I'm inside, I see a man with red, white, and blue on. He appears to be talking through an ear piece.
I then see Dad, he must have also taken the fire escape. The man turns to us, "Do you know me?"
