Rape is not a thing I'd ever try and glamorize in a book. Every woman should know how to defend themselves, regardless if they're young or older. I added this video to demonstrate the technique used in this chapter and to anyone wanting to learn how to escape a physical assault. Mild trigger warning in this chapter.

I had believed in God ever since birth. And since birth, I had heard one constant statement.

'God works in mysterious ways.'

That's what my mother told me every time something out of the ordinary had happened; a miracle. Like when I got into a great college despite my odds not being the best. Like when my brother nearly got run down by some girl on her bike whom he then later ended up marrying. God works in mysterious ways.

But God didn't always just work in mysterious ways when he was feeling mischievous. He also worked mysteriously in times of need, in times where prayers just didn't seem to be enough and where pleas of mercy drowned out in the screams of agony.

The second I felt my attacker push a single, thick finger inside me, my body went from being numbed in fear, to being electrocuted into a jumpstart.

Every limb in my body jerked alive and acted on pure instinct; My arms shoved against his shoulders and my body twisted to the side. My legs bent up and my feet pushed me out from under him and then reared upwards. With a swift kick he didn't see coming, I kicked him in the crotch with as much strength as I had left, my heel planting directly in between the Devil's legs.

The strained holler of pain I heard was my cue to scramble as he pulled back. I somehow made it to my feet, somehow. The Devil was incapacitated long enough for me to run, and therefore, I bolted.

"Fucking bitch!" I heard him roar behind me, but then silence. I was too scared to look over my shoulder. I ran as fast as I could, away from him. I ran out of my heels. I let them fall off my feet and let my bare soles hit the burning cold asphalt as I ran out of the alley, seeking civilization.

Unfortunately the alley didn't lead out onto the main road, but led me deeper into a dark abyss. I had no idea where I was, only that I was on the other side of the entrance of the club. There was no way I was risking going into any of the other alleys, so I stayed on the path I was running now.

But then where was I supposed to run to?

I was shaking uncontrollably. Every breath from my chest came out accompanied by a small sob, a sound that sounded strangled in my throat. Fear raced through me like a sickness that made me want to throw up. When I heard a metallic clatter behind me, I snapped around to the sound and found a shadow coming towards me, raging like a bull, but running with a limp.

The Devil. He hadn't fucking given up.

Before I could let my body get frozen in fear once more, I spun around and began running again. More sobs broke from my lips. I didn't want to be here. My head was pounding and my knees were shaking, barely holding me, but I didn't allow myself to stop. I needed to get away. My breath was coming out in whimpers as I ran, and my mind was in a frenzy.

I didn't know where I was headed and I didn't know how much further I could go on. Please, God. Everything inside me was shutting down, fear taking control. I couldn't keep going.
