I look at myself in the mirror. A tear stained, puffy, red face, nearly redder than my gross, greasy hair. Just the look I was aiming for.
"Keria sweetie?" says my mom poking her head around the corner of my door.
"Yeah?" I ask.
"Are you planning to, uh.. Leave your room today?" She asks softly.
"I don't know. Maybe." I say sitting back down on my bed.
"Maybe you should have a shower." She suggests.
"Yeah, That's a good idea."
I lie on my bed, staring at my ceiling. I pull a hair tie off my wrist and tie it into a messy pony tail. I walk down stairs and into the kitchen. Hopefully I have missed the rest of the family. But I guess not. Theo wipes his eyes and says "Boo hoo! Mommy pass me some ice cream and tissues. Whats a good chick flick to watch?" I ignore him and walk past. I open the fridge and snap a row of caramel chocolate from the block.
"You shouldn't be eating that for breakfast Keria." Mom says facing me.
"It's morning tea." I tell her. She smirks then looks out the front window, "Also, there is a new family across the road and i'm making you go give them this cake and say hello!"
"What? No way Mom!" I yell. Theo laughs loudly, so I show him a rude gesture.
"Keira don't do that. The cake is in the fridge when you decide to give it to them." I moan and walk back to my room.
I bet it's just going to be old people just like the rest of the neighborhood. I don't make that much effort to get changed. I pull on a plain white blouse and some shorts. I untie my hair and attempt to brush it. The curls have REALLY reacted to the heat. I stuff my feet in some nike slides and shuffle back down stairs. I walk into the kitchen to see Ellie on her tiptoes, her face hidden in the fridge. "What are you looking for Ellie?" I ask walking over. I open the fridge wider to see Ellie's fingers covered in chocolate goo. "Ew! What is that?" Then it hits me. I look up at the cake and there were many, many smudges and holes that had been picked out. "ELLIE! THAT IS FOR THE NEIGHBOURS!" I yell and push her out the way. Shit... I grab the cake and quickly carry it over the the fridge. I look at the disaster cake. I grab a spoon from the draw and try to cover the holes with icing."That will have to do.." I sigh and haul it out the door.
I take the short walk across the road to the Lenses old house. Mr and Mrs Lenses lived in that house for over 15 years. But when Mrs Lenses died, Mr Lenses went to live with his kids down the road. I never really noticed the house much, even if it was straight across from mine. I walk up the cobbled path and to the dark oak door. It looked pretty tidy if they just moved in today. They must of moved in yesterday or the day before when I was hiding in my room. I ring the very clean door bell. I hear the sound of chimes echo through the house. I hear a sharp voice yell out "TOM GO GET IT." Yikes. It's going to be another boring, bickering, old couple in their 80's. I scuff my feet for a few minutes waiting. Suddenly the door opens. I look up expecting to see a elderly man. But all I see is air. I look down to eye level to see a boy. I gasp, a little taken aback.
"Did I scare you without a mask?" The boy grins.
"Um.. No.. Um. I was expecting a old person." I say stuttering.
"I'm not 7 you know. Im 14." He smiles. My mouth drops.
"Um.. Cake..?" I say trusting the container with the chocolate cake in it. I quickly turn and start running down the cobble stones.
"Thanks?" He calls.
